Provincial minimum wage to increase this fall

The Saskatchewan Government has announced their plan to increase minimum wage to $13 per hour as of October 2022 with a long-term goal of $15 per hour by 2024. 

Saskatchewan currently has the lowest minimum wage in the country, sitting at $11.81 per hour. 

In a scrum on Tuesday addressing the changes, Minister Don Morgan said that economic factors played a role in the decision to increase minimum wage. 

Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency releases wildfire expectations as part of provincial briefing

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) held a media briefing on Thursday morning to provide insight on their spring outlook and the preparations that have been made for the 2022 season. 

Precautions and preparations are taken each year concerning flooding, grassfires, and wildfires in the province.

SPSA equipped for 2022 season

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) held a media briefing on Thursday morning to provide insight on their spring outlook and the preparations that have been made for the 2022 season. 

Precautions and preparations are taken each year concerning flooding, grassfires, and wildfires in the province. 

Chris Clement, Executive Director of Projects and Public Relations with the SPSA, said that the spring thaw is nearly concluded in much of the province. 

Fewer bumps in the road in sight

Residents can soon look forward to smoother roads as the annual paving program began in various locations throughout the city on Monday. 

Over 50 spots have been identified for repair in the 2022 Asphalt Maintenance Program. This program covers failures in the roadway, such as potholes, repairs due to utility work, and maintenance to pathways. 

The Asphalt Maintenance Program is only scheduled to take a couple of weeks and will be closely followed by the 2022 Paving and Concrete program. 

One step closer to affordable childcare

The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have taken another step in significantly reducing the cost of regulated childcare fees for children under six in the province. 

The reduction in cost is part of $1.09 billion being invested through the Canada-Saskatchewan Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement to make regulated childcare more affordable for Saskatchewan families by 2026. 

Gerry Craswell, Assistant Deputy Minister with the Ministry of Education, elaborated on the agreement. 

Sea to Sea for PTSD

An Alberta man has made it his mission to raise awareness about the effects of PTSD as he makes the strenuous trek from Cranbrook B.C. to St. John’s Newfoundland. 

Departing B.C. on April 4, the Sea to Sea for PTSD team arrived in Swift Current on Friday afternoon and were greeted by RCMP at the weigh scales west of the city. 

Chad Kennedy, the driving force behind the mission said that it was created out of one of the most difficult times in his life. 

Saskatchewan Big Game Draw to commence this weekend

The Saskatchewan Big Game Draw is opening up this Sunday, with hunters in the province having until May 25 to finish their online applications. 

Travis Williams, Wildlife Allocation Specialist, said that the draw continues to be an extremely popular opportunity in Saskatchewan. 

“Last year in 2021, the ministry received almost 124,000 applications,” he said. “And we expect this year to be at or above the same level as last year.” 

The Big Game Draw is used to allocate a limited number of hunting licenses to Saskatchewan residents in a fair manor. 

Lac Pelletier theft has RCMP on high alert

The Swift Current Rural RCMP are investigating a theft that took place in the Lac Pelletier Regional Park area. 

Sometime between September 2021 and April 2022, a ShoreMaster Boat Lift was stolen from the area. 

RCMP are asking residents to check the serial number if they have recently purchased a boatlift for a good price, and phone the police as it may be stolen.

Arrangements of the Oratorio echo though Swift Current

The smooth harmonies of the Oratorio Choir echoed throughout Swift Current on Monday night at their Spring concert. 

Due to several circumstances, the group has not been able to put on a concert since Christmas time. 

Marcia McLean, Choral Director of the Swift Current Oratorio Choir, said that the event was a resounding success. 

“It was pretty packed,” she said. “We had probably over 120 people there, so it was very well received.” 

McLean added that it was a fantastic feeling to be able to return to some sense of normalcy.
