Province's first eating disorders recovery centre for young Albertans opens in Calgary

The province’s first eating disorders residential recovery centre for young Albertans is now operational in Calgary.

The Government of Alberta provided an update Thursday during Eating Disorders Awareness Week (Feb. 1-7).

The EHN Sandstone Recovery Centre is a partnership between the Government of Alberta, Recovery Alberta, Silver Linings Foundation and Edgewood Health Network (EHN Canada).

O'Chiese First Nation resident charged with second-degree murder

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit arrested 27-year-old Derrick Phazar Whitford of O'Chiese First Nation on Feb. 7.

Whitford was wanted for the second-degree murder of an 18-year-old O'Chiese First Nation resident in November 2024.

He was also wanted on several unrelated offences, including Breach of Probation, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Flight from Peace Officer, Robbery, and several firearm related offences.

Whitford will be taken before a Justice of the Peace concerning his detention and future court date.

Ontario man charged with drug trafficking in Red Deer

A 19-year-old Ontario man is facing charges following a drug trafficking investigation by the Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section.

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the Vanier area of Red Deer. 

As a result of the investigation, police seized 730 grams of cocaine, over 400 oxycodone tablets, items used for the production of crack cocaine, other items and materials used in the trafficking of controlled substances and over $4,500 in Canadian currency.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit have laid charges in the reported November 2024 homicide on O’Chiese First Nation. RCMP have determined the victim to be 18-year-old O’Chiese First Nation resident Travis Strawberry.

Update: Didsbury RCMP locate missing man

Update:

Didsbury RCMP are reporting that 44-year-old Sean Boyd has been located safe.

Didsbury RCMP was seeking public assistance in locating missing 44-year-old Sean Boyd.

Boyd was last seen in Didsbury in the spring of 2024. Police believed he was in the area of Enderby, B.C.

Snowmobiles and trailer stolen from Wetaskiwin dealership using fake bank draft

A Wetaskiwin dealership is out thousands of dollars after a customer used a fraudulent bank draft to purchase two snowmobiles and a trailer.

RCMP say the business was approached by the buyer with what appeared to be a legitimate bank draft.  After the transaction was complete, the victim discovered that the bank draft was counterfeit.

This scam has raised concerns as to how realistic the bank draft appeared. 

Two men charged following seizure of stolen vehicles and drugs in Wetaskiwin County on Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve, Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report that a vehicle with on board GPS tracking was stolen and was at a location in Wetaskiwin County. 

Upon arrival, three individuals were arrested.

Following a search, police discovered both the original stolen Jeep as well as a stolen Dodge truck. 

RCMP also located an imitation firearm and prepackaged Fentanyl ready for distribution.

The Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report of an assault at a rural home on Township Road 441 in Wetaskiwin County.

After attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful, RCMP contained the residence and the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed to assist.

A warrant was obtained to enter the home and arrest the suspect. 

When entering the home, officers were shot at by the suspect.

Police continued efforts to de-escalate the situation. 

Update: STARS responds to collision near Lacombe; traffic on QEII being rerouted

At 4:12 p.m., the Blackfalds RCMP advised that the highway was open, and normal traffic flow had resumed.

On Dec. 13 at 9:27 a.m., the STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched to a motor vehicle collision near Lacombe.

The collision was on Highway 2 northbound from Highway 12 to Highway 2A. 

Sylvan Lake man sentenced to 14 years in prison for child sex crimes

A Sylvan Lake man who admitted to driving to Billings, Montana believing he was going to meet a 12-year-old girl for sex was sentenced Wednesday to 14 years in prison.

The sentence will be followed by a lifetime of supervised release, according to U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich.

The defendant, Andrew Scott Brown, 43, pleaded guilty in August to attempted coercion and enticement and distribution of child pornography.

The court also ordered a total of $13,200 in restitution and special assessments.
