'God Performed a Miracle': Pastor rescued from captivity thankful for support and prayers

A pastor who was allegedly kidnapped while preaching at a church service in South Africa is praising God for saving him.

Josh Sullivan, 34, and his family were working at a church in Motherwell in South Africa earlier this month, when it's alleged that six armed men entered the church and kidnapped the pastor.

According to the South African Police Service, an operation to find Josh was launched after they received verified intelligence about his kidnapping and where he was being held.

Square One World Media in Winnipeg has brought over a ministry couple from Ukraine to share in person with Manitobans what God is doing during wartime.

Natalia and Nikolai Chernomor help run a Christian media company called The Bible Today in Ukraine. They have partnered with the Manitoba Christian media company, Square One World Media (S1WM), for over 25 years. S1WM brought the couple to Winnipeg this week to share what God is up to in their country despite the tensions caused by the continuing war with Russia. 

Woman, 20, dead following crash on Highway 1

A 20-year-old woman is dead following a collision Friday near Virden, Manitoba.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. on Highway 1 and Highway 83.

RCMP said a car driven by a 20-year-old woman was travelling southbound on Highway 83 when it attempted to cross Highway 1, colliding with a pickup truck travelling westbound on Highway 1.

The collision claimed the life of the 20-year-old woman. The 74-year-old driver of the pickup truck was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Virden RCMP continue to investigate. 

Winnipeg students transform concrete barriers into playoff art for Jets fans

A group of art students from a school in the city's Centennial neighbourhood added a pop of colour to Winnipeg's Whiteout Street parties. 

The Grade 9 youth from Hugh John MacDonald School were asked by Take Pride Winnipeg to paint concrete barriers for the exciting event. 

The barriers, needed for safety reasons, were transformed into colourful art pieces to celebrate the Winnipeg Jets.

Politicians spar in Manitoba legislature over government therapy contract

Tempers flared at the Manitoba legislature Tuesday as the Opposition Progressive Conservatives questioned the NDP government about a contract for mental health therapy, suggesting it may have been for the benefit of Finance Minister Adrien Sala.

Tory Greg Nesbitt tabled a document that shows the Finance department recently signed a contract for $10,205 with a counselling services provider in Winnipeg. The provider advertises services including stress management, grief counselling and conflict resolution.

Advance poll turnout breaks record with 7.3M ballots cast, Elections Canada says

The waning days of the federal election campaign saw voters turn out in record numbers for advance polls and party leaders attempt to poke holes in each others' platforms.

Elections Canada said in a news release Tuesday that the four days of advance polling between Friday and Monday set a new record for turnout, with 7.3 million people casting ballots early.

That's up 25 per cent from the 5.8 million people who took part in advance voting in the 2021 federal election.

Driven by faith, Jim Caviezel prepares to reprise role in The Resurrection of Christ

The sequel to Mel Gibson's 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ, is set to begin filming in August, and Jim Caviezel has been going to C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters to prepare to reprise the role of Jesus. 

The Resurrection of Christ is scheduled to be released in 2026, more than 20 years after the original.
