My younger daughter and I sat and stared in silence. It had been well over 40 years since I'd seen the sight. For her, it was a first. It was a tiny, plain, unimpressive garage apartment, leaning and peeling with age. It was the place of my birth.
As the little South Texas town of El Campo faded in the rear-view mirror, the contrast between my life in the mid 1930s and my life today stood out in bold relief. I blurted out, "I feel like a turtle on a fence post." Startled, my daughter asked for an explanation.
Escaped inmate in The Pas has been apprehended: RCMP
The Pas RCMP have apprehended an escaped inmate at Grace Lake airport.
On Monday night at approximately 7 p.m., RCMP say that they were alerted over two inmates who had escaped from The Pas Correctional Centre.
The first inmate was safely apprehended by RCMP around 8:30 p.m.
The RCMP thanks the media and the public for their assistance, and vigilance in this matter
Woman run over by her vehicle during carjacking in downtown Winnipeg
A woman is recovering after being run over by her own vehicle during a carjacking that took place in broad daylight in downtown Winnipeg.
The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, in the 300 block of York Ave. near Carlton St.
Winnipeg police say that a 45-year-old woman was robbed of her Toyota Tundra in a parking lot near the intersection of York Avenue and Carlton Street.
Fire takes the life of a dog, man taken to hospital in critical condition
A dog is dead and a man has been taken to hospital in critical condition following a house fire Monday afternoon.
At approximately 12:51 p.m. on Oct. 28, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a multi-family building in the 500 block of Marion Street.
There was heavy smoke coming from the building when crews arrived. Firefighters located one person and helped them evacuate from the building. The individual was treated and transported to the hospital in critical condition.
12, 13, and 14 year olds charged after man was shot Downtown
Three youths face firearm-related charges after a man in his 70s was shot early Monday morning.
At approximately midnight on Oct. 28, General Patrol officers from the Central District with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team responded to the report of a male shot Downtown in the area of Hargrave Street and Portage Avenue.

Man suffers life-altering injuries after machete attack in West End
A man suffered life-altering injuries after being attacked while walking in the West End.
Winnipeg police say the man was walking along Ellice Ave. near Beverley St. at around 4:15 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, when he was assaulted from behind by a suspect who is believed to have been armed with a machete.
The victim walked to the Health Sciences Centre on William Ave., where Winnipeg police were contacted.
Police say the 56-year-old victim and the suspect are not known to each other. No arrests have been made.

Early morning fire claims life of cat, leaves two families without a home
A fire early Monday morning has claimed the life of a cat and left two families without a place to live.
Shortly after 3:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a two-storey home in the 400 block of Redwood Avenue.
The house was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived and it had spread to a neighbouring home.
Firefighters fought the fire from outside, declaring it under control just over an hour later.
Most residents evacuated before crews arrived. Firefighters also temporarily evacuated some neighbouring homes as a precaution.
