Manitoba Hydro crews face tough conditions repairing fire-hit infrastructure
Manitoba Hydro crews are working to restore electricity in parts of northern Manitoba after wildfires damaged critical power infrastructure.
The utility says more than 1,200 wooden power poles have been damaged or destroyed by wildfires so far this year, along with related equipment such as transformers and power lines. In many areas, the full extent of the damage is only now becoming visible — and some fires are still burning.
Wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia have residents on high alert
Thousands are out of their homes, and many more are on alert to evacuate as wildfires continue to rage across Atlantic Canada.
Officials in Newfoundland and Labrador have expanded an evacuation alert along the Bay De Verde Peninsula as the Kingston wildfire burns nearby.
The community of Job's Cove in Newfoundland is affected by the expanded evacuation alert for the wildfire, which is considered out-of-control and is now more than 90 square kilometres in size.
The Kingston fire is the largest in the province and has forced more than 3,000 people from their homes.
Conservatives plan national campaign against federal electric vehicle mandates
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has set his sights on Canada's electric vehicle mandate, pledging Thursday that his party will embark on a national campaign to push the Liberal government to scrap the policy he's dubbed the "Carney tax."
Poilievre led the charge as the Conservatives relentlessly attacked the consumer carbon price over the last two years, with the Liberals admitting the Tory tactics swayed public opinion and forced them to end the so-called carbon tax earlier this year.
Bombers hold on for dramatic last-second win
Say this about the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as they hit the halfway mark of their 2025 Canadian Football League season:
They have certainly developed a flair for the dramatic — and, yes, sometimes unnecessarily — so much so that the final moments of their games could bring a stone-cold corpse to life again.
The Blue Bombers improved to 5-4 with another all-over-the-map 30-27 victory over the Ottawa RedBlacks in front of another capacity Princess Auto Stadium crowd of 32,343 that certainly felt much more difficult than it needed to be by the night’s end.

We have an anchor
Hebrews 6:19
The word picture of an anchor is used often in ancient literature, but it’s used only once in the New Testament in picturing hope as an anchor for our soul. Lots of hymns and gospel songs make use of this anchor metaphor. Every one of them comes back to Hebrews 6:19: “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul...”
There’s something beautiful in this word picture that I would have missed without the insight of one very capable scholar:
Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Winnipeg and a wide area of southern Manitoba as a cold front moves through the region Thursday afternoon and evening.
The watch, issued at 1:41 p.m., also covers communities including Selkirk, Portage la Prairie, Steinbach, Morden, Gimli, the Whiteshell, and areas as far north as Berens River and Little Grand Rapids.
Forecasters say conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail, heavy rain, and dangerous lightning.
