Political heat in Uganda draws concern of Christian educators

Increasing political tension in Uganda’s election season has Christian educators concerned. 

President Yoweri Museveni has held office for nearly 40 years. Ever since he seized power in 1986, Uganda has been “comparatively stable, but increasingly authoritarian,” according to a 2025 report from the U.S.-based Congressional Research Service. Uganda has never had a democratic transition of power.

Federal Liberals looking to provide 'certainty' to investors in fall budget

Major institutional investors are asking the federal government to give them a reason to invest more at home in the upcoming fall budget, says the Liberal MPs leading budget consultations across Canada.

The federal Liberals are in the midst of consultations on the upcoming 2025 budget. While federal budgets typically are tabled in the spring, this one is set to land during the fall session of Parliament.

RCMP creates drone corridor along part of U.S. border in bid to boost security

The RCMP is introducing a drone corridor along part of the Canada-U.S. border in an effort to boost security.

Drones are to patrol the border in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in what the RCMP says is a trial.

The force says the corridor has been established with help from Transport Canada and drone patrols will target illegal activity including smuggling and drug trafficking.

It says the corridor extends from the ground to 500 feet in the air and one nautical mile north of the border, or just under two kilometres.

Manitoba survivors of abuse by former Anglican priest plan healing advocacy council

Survivors of abuse by former Anglican priest and Scout leader Ralph Rowe are working to create a national advocacy and advisory council aimed at promoting men’s healing, the Anglican Journal reports.

Rowe, who served in northern Ontario and in several northern Manitoba communities, was convicted of 75 sexual crimes against children that took place between 1974 and 1987. It is believed that Rowe may have abused up to 500 children during that time.

RCMP investigate possible shooting near Portage la Prairie

RCMP officers are asking anyone with information regarding a possible shooting in the RM of Norfolk to come forward.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on August 9, Portage la Prairie RCMP officers were dispatched to a complaint about shots fired at a residence in the RM of Norfolk, near Road 58 West and Road 67 North.

Upon arrival, they spoke with a resident who believed a bullet was shot through the front window of the house and another into a camper parked on the property. 

No bullets were located on the property and no one inside the residence was physically injured.

Suspect bites police officer after St. Vital theft

A man has been arrested after an off-duty police officer saw him break into a garage in St. Vital.

On August 10, 2025, a 36-year-old male was seen breaking into a garage in the 100 block of Sterling Avenue. Prior to the break in, it was determined that the suspect had stolen merchandise from two stores in St. Vital.

Two separate stores in the 1200 block of 1200 St. Mary's Road reported theft of merchandise between 4:27 p.m. and 5 p.m. The stolen merchandise was valued at over $1,000 combined.

Young sisters raise hundreds for cancer support through lemonade sales

It was a successful weekend for two young Winnipeg girls who used lemons and lemonade to help in the fight against cancer. 

Erika,11 and Carly, 7, set up a lemonade stand at Sandy Hook RV Resort on Saturday, where they sold lemonade, cookies, bookmarks and crocheted lemons, with all funds going to support CancerCare Manitoba. 

"It started when we had a family member named Jack, and he died from cancer, and we wanted to do something," said Erika. "So we started a little lemonade stand and went through CancerCare Manitoba, got stuff and did that for the past few years."
