One dead in collision near Canmore

RCMP has confirmed that a fatality has been reported in a two-vehicle collision, just south of Canmore.

Police are still on the scene of the collision which occurred in the earlier morning hours on Sunday on Highway 1A, westbound headed to Windridge Road. Highway 1A remains closed from Canmore to Exshaw.

"Traffic in both directions is blocked. Officers anticipate being on the scene for several hours while they investigate this collision," stated an earlier RCMP press release.

Police reported earlier that two individuals sustained serious injuries. 

Calgary zoo announces the return of a beloved tradition

The 11th annual Penguin Walk is set to officially start on Friday, January 13 at 10:30 A.M. at the Wilder Institute Calgary Zoo. 

"The annual Penguin Walk is a tremendous enrichment opportunity for our king penguins, a species known to walk far distances to find open water in the wild," The Calgary Zoo said in a media release. "This highly anticipated program allows visitors to get an up-close look at the group of king penguins as they explore, exercise and waddle their way through the zoo."

Canada Post employee allegedly stole 500 items

On November 23, the Wainwright RCMP, the Eastern Alberta District (EAD) Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), along with Postal Inspectors from Canada Post executed a search warrant in the evening for a residence and vehicle belonging to a Canada Post employee.

"A significant seizure of stolen property in excess of 500 deliverable items was recovered. The deliverable parcels have been returned to Canada Post for continuation in the delivery process to their intended destination," RCMP press releases stated.

19-year-old accused of Calgary police officer's murder hears verdict

The 19-year-old man who was on trial for the first-degree murder in the hit-and-run death of Calgary police officer, Sgt. Andrew Harnett was found guilty of manslaughter at the Court of King's Bench in Calgary on Thursday afternoon. The man's name is under a publication ban as he was 17 when the offence took place.

In delivering the decision, Justice Anna Loparco said that finding the accused guilty of first-degree murder was a high bar to meet, one that was not met in this case.

Feline reunited with family after 54 days lost in Kananaskis Country

On a particularly chilly evening at the end of August, Jody Hudey and her son Dolphis Seguin decided that the family cat, Gustophe, would spend the night snuggled with them in their tents. The family, who is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba had made the trek to the Spray Lakes West Campground in Alberta for Dolphis' birthday. On that fateful evening, Hudey took Gustophe out of his kennel and took him inside the tent, making sure he had his harness on. 

Multiple charges laid in connection with University of Calgary threats

Calgary police have charged 41-year-old Nicklaus Youal Ekhugie with one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of sexual assault after a police investigation into reports that a male suspect had been seen on the University of Calgary campus brandishing a weapon and stabbing people.

It is believed that Ekhugie is also responsible for a sexual assault that occurred earlier the same day downtown.

Female lead is needed for a made-in-Alberta film

Factory Film Studio and Hot Shots Films, based in Edmonton, are searching for the female lead of an upcoming non-union feature film: Red Pine City. The movie centers on a reluctant enforcer who teams up with a beautiful, talented country singer to remove the scourge of a local mobster. The film is currently in pre-production. 

Province declares a provincial day of mourning on September 19

The province is inviting Albertans to participate in an outdoor ceremony in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth at the Alberta legislature at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 19. 

"The day of her funeral in London will begin with a moment of silence. Workplaces, schools, offices and retail stores are encouraged to also observe the moment of silence."
