The 2nd annual Cruise and Walk for a Cure to raise donations for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) of Saskatchewan and also raise awareness for type 1 diabetes will be taking place this Saturday, June 25th. 

The walk will begin at the Credit Union Iplex at 11:00 am and the cruise will leave from there at 1:00 pm 

The event is being coordinated by Jelena Funk and Vince Sebo.

 Funk details how the event began. 

Last month SGI focused its traffic safety spotlight on impaired driving with a particular focus on cannabis-impaired driving. 

A spokesperson with SGI, Tyler McMurchy provides some insight into the results from last month's spotlight. 

"We have the results back from the traffic safety spotlight. Now, these results are not substance-specific, they refer to both drug and alcohol impairment. The number of impaired drivers reported by police for the month of May for the province of Saskatchewan was 328 drivers that were caught after drinking or consuming drugs."

Swift Current Municipal RCMP is asking for the public's assistance locating a green and white Pelican single person Kayak.

The boat was stolen in the spring prior to June 1, 2022, from a residence on the 800 block of 2Nd Avenue SE in Swift Current.

Participants were hoping for a frisbee in one at the first annual Canadian Mental Health Association Spring Fling Disc Golf Tournament that took place this past weekend. 

Executive Director with CMHA Swift Current, Todd Vallee explains the connection between the sport and the CMHA. 

"Our members really enjoy disc golf and getting out in nature. The physical activity is really good for mental health and it's something that has been ridiculously popular with our members since the course opened here."

Members and staff of the Swift Current & District Chamber of Commerce will soon have the opportunity to attend an upcoming speaker session on mental health in the workplace.

 

Chamber CEO Karla Wiens provides more details on the event taking place on June 23rd.

 

"These first two sessions are really about how to talk to people about mental health. It is not a skill that we are inherently equipped with. So these first two sessions are going to be really about how to be open and have those conversations."

 

Volunteers are still being sought to help out at the upcoming Windscape Kite Festival taking place this weekend. 

Volunteer Coordinator with Windscape, Brittany Williams provides details on the jobs available.

"We are a volunteer-run organization so we need lots of helpers out to run all of our events. We have everything from kids bubbles to making kites and lots of fun activities for children. As well we are looking for help running the field. So helping with recycling, signing in volunteers, and doing kite workshops."

Local disc golfers now have the opportunity to play 18 holes on the local course as it has recently expanded. 

As City of Swift Current Park's Manager Michael Newell explains, this was the plan from the beginning.

 "When we started or we first installed the first nine holes in the spring of 2021 we contacted Saskatchewan Disc Golf and we actually laid it out as an 18-hole course at that point in time but we only had the nine baskets so we were looking for future opportunities through grant funding to put in the back nine."

Kayla Myers, Committee member on the Southwest Run For Shelter Committee provides some details. 

"We utilize the Chinook Pathway in Swift Current. We are raising funds to be put towards the operations of Dorie's House Treatment Center."

Racers can participate in a 2K, 5K, 10K, or for the adventurous there is also a 16K event.
