United Way helps local students maintain reading levels over the summer

The United Way Summer Success Literacy Camp will be returning to Swift Current this August and taking place at Irwin School. 

Community Advancement with United Way Regina, Stacey Schwartz provides details on the focus of the camp. 

"So it's really about helping students and targeting individuals that are just needing that extra support during those months to help them continue to move forward in a progressive way when they go back to school in the fall. 

15 students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 2 will take part in the 10-day camp

Survey finds region welcoming to newcomers

The Southwest Saskatchewan Immigration Partnership (SSIP) is the Local Immigration Partnership in our region that engages in strategic planning, research, and collaboration with service providers and other institutions to support the settlement and integration of newcomers.

SSIP recently completed a survey as coordinator for SSIP Deanna Baje explains.

"It's about the region's capacity in settling and integrating newcomers. It's a newcomer survey stakeholder views on the characteristics, indicators and capacities of southwest Saskatchewan as a welcoming community."

What to do with hazardous waste

It's that time of year again when local residents can rid their homes of any hazardous waste materials they may have.

Keegan Story, Superintendent of Solid Waste and Diversion with the city of Swift Current provides details on the program.

"We will be holding our spring household hazardous waste collection event on Tuesday, May 31st from 1:00 pm-7:00 pm at the Innovation Credit Union Iplex parking lot. We will be on the southeast portion of the lower level."

Salvation Army continues to serve community throughout the year

The local Salvation Army is reminding people that donations are needed and welcomed all year round. 

Sue McKeown with the Salvation Army explains that they supplement people's grocery budgets instead of sustaining them with months of groceries as they can't afford to do that. 

McKeown details the value of the food distributed.

Border tips for long-weekend travelers

With the long weekend approaching the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reminding all travelers crossing the border of what they can expect this weekend and coming up during summer travel. 

With evolving COVID-19 requirements there can be delays during peak periods, travellers can help reduce wait times by coming prepared and completing their mandatory ArriveCAN submission within 72 hours before arriving at the border.

A successful end to an exciting competition season for the Dance Studio

It was a busy competition season this year for the Dance Studio in Swift Current but they were excited to be able to perform and compete again in person. 

The Dance Studio along with 17 other studios from across Alberta and Saskatchewan attended the Kindersley Konnection competition from April 22th-24th. 31 dancers from the Dance Studio were in attendance with students performing 42 routines. The students placed with 32 of the routines receiving three 3rd place, eight 2nd place, and twenty-one first place awards. 

Been A Minute from the Hunter Brothers was worth the wait

Throughout the pandemic, Shaunavon's very own country music superstars the Hunter Brothers have continued to perfect their craft and record music. 

At the most recent Saskatchewan Country Music Awards held last month, the group walked away with a number of awards including album of the year for their album "Been a minute"

Spotlight this week on aquatic invasive species

Aquatic Invasive Species are under the microscope this week in the province as May 9th through to the 13th is awareness week for these species in the province. 

Jeri Geiger, Team Lead for the Aquatic Invasive Species Program with the Ministry of the Environment provides some details on the species. 

"Aquatic Invasive Species are any non-native organism, so that can be a plant, invertebrate, or fish that are introduced to an area where they are not native. They have the ability to negatively impact our environment, economy, and infrastructure."

CEO and Founder of the site, Logan Yergens was born in Estevan and provides details on his new online venture. 

"So Willow.ca is an online platform that allows everybody to get into real estate regardless of wealth. Our smallest amount currently with our first couple of properties is less than $13 and someone can get started, it's democratizing real estate to make it accessible to everybody."
