Bigger grants, broader reach: Altona Community Foundation expands support with help from Thomas Sill Foundation

The Altona Community Foundation (ACF) was able to dole out more funds than usual during its recent 2025 spring granting period.

In total, ACF reinvested just over $70,000 to 11 area organizations and projects.

4th Annual Kaitlyn Marie Reimer Scholarship awarded to Cheyenne Thiessen

Katie Cares has awarded the 4th annual Kaitlyn Marie Reimer Scholarship to Cheyenne Thiessen, a Garden Valley Collegiate graduate pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Creative Writing at Brandon University. 

Cheyenne received the $2,000 scholarship in recognition of her hard work, dedication, and commitment to making a difference.

For longtime attendee and first-year organizer Lorna Epp, being part of the Morden Farmers Market is more than just a summer activity — it’s a celebration of local life. “The people — yeah, I love the people,” Epp shared. “It’s a nice atmosphere. We’re outside. We’re happy.”

McCain Foods looks for new processing potatoes

Company works with the Farming Smarter Association as it searches for options other than the century-old Russet Burbank variety

Russet Burbank has been the go to potato variety for Canadian farmers and consumers.

This year, McCain Foods in Chin, Alta., has entered a corporate partnership with the Farming Smarter Association to explore the viability of other varieties in its food processing plant for farmers to consider.

Farming Smarter is using one of its commercial plots to do a research trial growing four varieties using six treatments.

Midland MLA continuing to push for Elm Creek gym fix

Midland MLA Lauren Stone is renewing her push for the Manitoba government to address what she says are worsening conditions at Elm Creek School’s gymnasium.

Stone says the situation has not improved since she first raised the issue in the Legislature at the beginning of June, and she’s frustrated by the lack of response.

Still no answer from province

Despite petitions and public concern, Stone says the provincial government has yet to respond to requests for help.

Pritchard Memorial golf tournament sets ambitious fundraising goal for SCCR

This Saturday, July 5th at the Carman Golf and Country Club, the 28th annual Pritchard Memorial Golf Tournament will take place. The event is to honour the life of Mike Pritchard, who died of cancer on June 3rd, 1998. His younger brother Darren is one of the committee members, and joined the Morning Show to talk about the fundraising event's impact and legacy, as well as some very exciting news how this year's event will exclusively generate money for South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR).
