Bombers play party poopers in Rourke's CFL return

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers did more than just crash the party and spoil the Nathan Rourke coronation here on the left coast Sunday night.

It’s bigger than that. Much bigger. In mauling the B.C. Lions 20-11 in front of 30,803 at B.C. Place in a score that was flattering to the home side, they sent a crystal-clear message to the rest of the Canadian Football League: don’t let their 4-6 record fool anybody, these Blue Bombers have bolted up out of the grave after an 0-4 start and are absolutely feasting again.

Broadcaster Charles Adler, hospital exec Tracy Muggli named to Senate to represent Manitoba and Saskatchewan

Veteran broadcaster Charles Adler and Saskatchewan hospital executive Tracy Muggli are Canada's latest independent senators, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Saturday. 

Adler came to Canada from Hungary as a refugee at a young age and spent more than 50 years as a radio host and journalist.

A news release from the prime minister's office said Adler, who will represent Manitoba, used his platform to champion human rights and Canadian democracy during his long career.  

Days after wildfire evacuation ends, Jasper makes progress on path back to normal

The people of Jasper are making progress on getting back to normal after being allowed back to their town, cleaning their homes, re-uniting with neighbours and seeking insurance information.

Friday was the first day residents were allowed back after a wildfire forced the evacuation of the entire community, which eventually lost close to one third of its structures in the blaze.

Columbarium to offer burial choice at Altona cemetery

Some new features are coming to the Altona Cemetery, including its first columbarium.
    
Altona is one of the few communities in southern Manitoba that doesn't have one, according to Councilor Tammy Braun, who also serves on the town's Recreation and Culture committee that's been hard at work making improvements at the cemetery.

St. Jean's Fire Department Celebrates $25,000 BASF Grant with Community Event

The St. Jean Fire Department held an important event on August 16, 2024, to celebrate the $25,000 grant they received from BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions. The grant, awarded as part of BASF's commitment to supporting rural communities, was given to the department thanks to a huge community effort.

"We were incredibly impressed by the local support for the Volunteer Fire Department here," said Brent Collins, BASF Representative. "This fire department is incredibly important for the small community."

Farmers asked to keep an eye out for verticillium stripe this year

With farmers getting close to harvest they're taking an extra look at any diseases that could pop up this year, including verticillium stripe.

While more common in eastern portions of Manitoba, samples have been seen in fields all the west to Alberta.

The disease is a relative newcomer, with agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada Breanna Miller explaining its impact.

Plum Coulee homecoming celebration held for award winning ceramics artist Grace Nickel

Grace Nickel was the focus of a homecoming celebration Saturday during Plum Fest, serving as parade marshal and also officially opening her latest exhibit "Full Circle" at the Plum Coulee Elevator Museum. The exhibit was installed earlier this year, and will be on display through the end of the season at the museum.

The renowned ceramics artist was raised on a farm about three and a half miles outside of town and grew up in the community, going to elementary school there before attending high school at Garden Valley Collegiate (GVC) in Winkler.
