The Evan Thomas Memorial Fund: Breaking down the barrier of entry for Minor Hockey

The Winkler Community Foundation and the Evan Thomas Memorial Fund have teamed up with the Winkler Minor Hockey Association to launch a new initiative that helps young athletes participate in organized hockey. 

Through the newly activated Evan Thomas Memorial Trust Fund, the program will fully cover the registration fees for two players.

Australia reopening its market to Canadian Beef sends an important message

Australia has officially opened its market for fresh and frozen beef from Canada for the first time since BSE in 2003.

The Canadian Cattle Association is pleased noting its one of the last remaining countries to have maintained bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) restrictions, complete their risk assessment and open their market for Canadian beef. 

CCA President Tyler Fulton says Canadian beef farmers and ranchers are proud to produce the highest quality and safest beef in the world. 

'Time is of the essence’ for young mother with brain stem tumour

Approximately 10 months ago, Tiarra and Jordan Krahn of Winkler welcomed their third child, a healthy baby boy. 

What should have been a period of enjoying the addition to the family, however, transformed into a time of shock when they received some unfathomable news soon after. 

In the wake of the discovery, the community will come together to offer support to a family on a time-sensitive journey.  

Goldeyes fall to Fargo-Moorhead

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (39-32) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes (27-42) Tuesday evening at Blue Cross Park by a score of 4-2.
 
After three and a half innings of scoreless baseball, Keshawn Lynch and Matthew Warkentin reached on singles before Roby Enríquez ripped a two-run double off the centre field wall to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead.

Cornelius N. Driedger, 87, of Altona formerly of Blumenhof, passed away Tuesday, July 29th at Altona Memorial Health Centre. He is survived by his wife Elsie, 1 daughter, 2 sons, 1 sister, 1 brother, and their families. He was predeceased by 2 granddaughters, 2 sisters, and 4 brothers. 
A private funeral service for Cornelius N. Driedger will be held.  
Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona Thursday, July 31st from 1 to 7pm.

Two wildfire evacuations set to end, another begins in ongoing dry Prairie summer

Residents of two communities were preparing to head home Tuesday, while another community was being evacuated, as crews continued to battle wildfires across a large swath of the Prairies.

Some of the 2,400 residents of Tataskweyak Cree Nation in northern Manitoba started making their way back, two months after they were forced to leave by encroaching fire.

"It's very good news this week," Chief Doreen Spence said in a video posted to Facebook on Monday night.

From $20 to thousands: Local firefighter boot drives deliver big impact for wildfire relief

Our communities continue to step up and do what they can to support Northern Manitoba wildfire relief efforts.

This summer, members of several of our local fire departments took to the streets during the many community festivals that took place - using the regular boot drive to raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross. 

Among them, the St. Jean Fire Department which partnered with two other services to help bring in about $4,000.
