12-year-old on a mission, supporting family friend through cancer journey
Reece Fehr is a 12 year old on a mission. After learning that a family friend, Adrian Hofer, was diagnosed with cancer, he set out to raise funds to help Hofer through his cancer journey.
Fehr has set up a portable Gatorade stand with all profits going to Hofer. He has been attending his parents slow pitch games at the Winkler baseball diamonds this summer. So far, he has raised more than $600.

Helen Penner, 89, of Steinbach formerly of Niverville, passed away Friday, August 2nd at Rest Haven Care Home. She is survived by 1 son, 5 grandchildren, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Wilbert, 1 daughter, 2 sisters, and 1 brother.
The funeral service for Helen Penner will be held Friday, August 9th at 11am at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with burial at Heritage Cemetery.
Viewing will be at the chapel prior to the service.
Owner of camper, and his dog, escape unharmed after flames erupt Tuesday night
The owner of a camper, and his dog, escaped unharmed after flames erupted from the trailer Tuesday evening as it was parked at the Miami campground. Miami Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Travis Reichert says the call came in shortly after 9 p.m.
When crews arrived, the camper was fully involved, with the propane tanks venting off flames from the safety valves on the front of the trailer. Firefighters doused the flames, and were able to safely move the tanks to a safe distance to vent off remaining propane to avoid reignition.

Winkler Library: Epic scavenger hunt adds excitement to summer reading
The Winkler Library hosted an epic scavenger hunt event on Tuesday afternoon, August 6th, drawing in excited participants.
“The scavenger hunt is different from the one we've had ongoing throughout the summer. This one is more exclusive, using riddles and different prompts to get kids involved in the actual books and around our decorations around the library," said Isaiah Armstrong, Summer Programmer. “It gets kids in areas of the library where they're not used to going. Once they get older, then they kind of know the layout of the library a lot more.”
Harvest Festival’s ambiance to be boosted by organizational changes
The Harvest Festival, Winkler’s biggest event of the summer, will refine its format this year to ensure that attendees — no matter which event is their favourite — can be a part of a united festive atmosphere.
Karina Bueckert is the coordinator for the festival that runs August 9th-11th.
“I'm excited to see everything come together,” she says. “It's been a long journey of lots of details, so many notes and so many emails, and I'm excited.”

Yesterday Winkler Police Officers came across a collision while on patrol at 12:52pm at the intersection of Norquay Drive and 1st Street. Winkler Fire Department and Boundary Trails Emergency Medical Services also attended the scene.
