14-year-old card game designer brings 'DuckShot' to the Pembina Valley

If you’ve wandered through Forest Books and Media in Winkler, Morklers in Morden, or found yourself in the Home Hardware in Holland, you may have spotted a pixel-art duck staring up at you from a bright little card box.  

You’ve just encountered DuckShot: a homemade card game designed and produced by 14-year-old Caleb Giesbrecht. 

Yes, 14. 

From fries to families: McHappy Day makes a difference

On May 8th, McDonald’s restaurants in Morden and Winkler were buzzing with excitement and generosity as the community came together for McHappy Day, an annual event where a portion of proceeds from every food and beverage item sold is donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and other local children’s organizations.

May contract talks alarm sugar beet growers

Lack of progress means time is growing short to get a successfull crop into the ground in Southern Alberta.

Contract negotiations are dragging on for Alberta sugar beet producers.

It’s already early May, and Alberta Sugar Beet Growers and Rogers Sugar, the sole sugar-beet processing plant left in Canada, still haven’t hammered out a deal.

Jennifer Crowson, executive director with the Alberta Sugar Beet Growers, cautioned the Western Producer in an email that she was limited in what she can share, other than that they are still in active negotiations.

Hellebuyck answers MVP chants with playoff shutout

The Winnipeg Jets responded with urgency in Game 2 of their second-round playoff series, taking an early lead and maintaining control throughout a 4–0 win over the Dallas Stars to even the series at one game apiece.

The Jets played much more like the Jets of the regular season, and that goes for Connor Hellebuyck as well. He would end up stopping 21 shots on his way to a shutout. It's his fourth playoff shutout of his career, and his first since 2021. Hellebuyck now has a record of 18-1-1 in the last 20 home games.

With a Westman connection, Boreal joins us on Made in Manitoba with 'Winterbirds'

We've arrived at another Made in Manitoba, and this weekend we are thrilled to introduce you to the Ontario based group Boreal, and music from their latest album "Winterbirds".

The group is comprised of Katherine Wheatley, Angie Nussey and Tannis Slimmon, and it's because of Tannis that Boreal is our guest this evening. Tannis grew up on a farm north of Oak Lake in Western Manitoba, attended high school in Virden and spent time living in Winnipeg before moving to Ontario.

Winkler Fire Department responds to a structure fire

After being dispatched to a landfill fire in Altona for mutual aid just one day prior, the Winkler Fire Department responded to a small structure fire on Thursday morning on 7th Street. This adds yet another call to what’s already been a busy few weeks for the department.  

Crews were dispatched at 11:47 a.m. on May 8 after reports of an exterior fire at a home. Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the outside of the building, and no injuries were reported.

Community spirit shines in Food for All fundraiser across Winkler, Morden, and Altona

The Food for All fundraiser wrapped up this week with its final stop at Gardenland Co-op in Winkler, where the community once again showed up in a big way. The event, presented by Rede-Made Noodles and supported by local business sponsors, brought in a total of $5,853.13 in support of the Winkler & District Food Cupboard.
