Broncos win seesaw battle against Hurricanes

The Swift Current Broncos (15-15-0-1) had four separate one-goal leads against the Lethbridge Hurricanes (20-14-0-1) Friday night, fending off a late push for a 4-3 win on home ice.

Raphael Pelletier got the Broncos off and running with his 11th goal of the season 9:31 into the game. After Mathew Ward won a faceoff in the Broncos zone, Kayden Sadhra-Kang’s clearing attempt hit a stanchion and deflected right to Pelletier at centre, setting up a two-on-one rush.

Anaheim Ducks sign Gage Alexander to entry-level contract, assign him to AHL San Diego

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that they have signed 2002-born Swift Current Broncos goaltender Gage Alexander to a three-year, entry-level contract and assigned him to San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League. He was drafted by the Ducks 148th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Alexander, from Okotoks, Alta., was in his first year with the Broncos after being acquired in an off-season trade with the Winnipeg ICE. In 15 games the 6’7’’ goaltender posted an 8-5-0-1 record with a 3.47 goals against average and an .898 save percentage.

WHL announces postponement of Broncos game in Medicine Hat

The Western Hockey League announced today the postponement of tonight’s game between the Swift Current Broncos and Medicine Hat Tigers due to adverse weather and unsafe travel conditions in southwest Saskatchewan.

The game will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Broncos' next game is scheduled for Friday, December 30, when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7:00pm from InnovationPlex.

Penalty kill shines as Broncos down Rebels 4-1

The Swift Current Broncos (14-15-0-1) penalty kill unit came up clutch Saturday night, going a perfect five for five, including a five-minute kill in the third period, as the Broncos downed the Red Deer Rebels (22-6-1-3) 4-1.

Just like the previous night in Edmonton, the Broncos jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds into the game. Off a faceoff win in the Red Deer zone, the Broncos went across the blue line and Owen Pickering’s shot from the left point deflected off a Rebel and in, giving Swift Current the lead.

Filmon's historic night leads Broncos over Oil Kings

Josh Filmon came within one goal of tying the WHL record for goals in a game, scoring six and adding an assist as the Swift Current Broncos (14-15-0-1) snapped their five-game losing streak with an 8-4 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings (4-27-1-0).

It was a dream start to the game for the Broncos, jumping out to a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds after puck drop. Mathew Ward took a centring pass while heading to the net, but wasn’t able to get a good shot away. The puck came off the pad of Kolby Hay and right to Filmon who knocked in his first goal of the night.

Broncos fall 5-2 to Rockets on home ice

The Swift Current Broncos (13-15-0-1) had long stretches of outplaying the Kelowna Rockets (11-13-3-0) Wednesday night, but couldn’t solve Jari Kykkanen over the final 40 minutes in a 5-2 loss.

The Rockets jumped out to a 1-0 near the halfway point of the first period off the rush. Andrew Cristall skated into the Broncos zone on right wing before circling back and finding Caden Price heading down the slot. Price took the feed and wired a shot over the blocker of Reid Dyck for the opening goal of the game.

Broncos gain a point, but fall in shootout to Hurricanes

The Swift Current Broncos (13-14-0-0) saw their 3-2 lead disappear in the final minutes of play before the Lethbridge Hurricanes (18-11-0-1) completed their comeback in a 4-3 shootout final.

It was the Broncos annual teddy bear toss night, and Raphael Pelletier wasted no time by scoring the coveted goal just 1:22 into the game. The Hurricanes turned the puck over multiple times in their own zone before Caleb Wyrostok centred for Pelletier who was skating down the right side of the Hurricanes end.

Second period the difference as Broncos fall in Lethbridge

The Swift Current Broncos (12-13-0-0) were even with the Lethbridge Hurricanes (16-11-0-1) through 20 minutes, but a four-goal second period was the difference as the Broncos dropped a 7-2 game.

The Hurricanes took the lead early following a turnover inside the Broncos zone. Jett Jones intercepted a pass and worked the puck down to Tyson Zimmer in the left circle. Zimmer had his eyes on Tyson Laventure across the ice, but fired a shot through the five hole of Reid Dyck 3:23 into the game.

Broncos' streak ends with 4-2 loss to Brandon

The Swift Current Broncos (12-12-0-0) ran into penalty trouble Saturday night, taking eight minor penalties in a 4-2 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings (10-15-2-0) at Westoba Place.

The Broncos started the game off on the right foot by scoring a power play goal shortly after puck drop. Clarke Caswell picked up the puck along the goal line and skated toward the crease before lifting a shot past the blocker of Carson Bjarnason, scoring his fifth goal of the season in his hometown just 2:23 into the game.
