Broncos come from behind to down Winnipeg 4-3
The Swift Current Broncos (12-11-0-0) battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the second period and then held off a strong push by the Winnipeg ICE (22-4-0-0) for a 4-3 win Friday night.
The Broncos had a very strong start to Friday’s game, outshooting and outplaying the ICE in the early going. That led to Swift Current scoring the opening goal of the night.
Broncos complete weekend sweep of Oil Kings with hard-fought 5-3 win
The Swift Current Broncos (11-11-0-0) certainly earned their two points on Saturday night, fending off the Edmonton Oil Kings (4-20-1-0) who tied the game on three separate occasions, before pulling away with a 5-3 victory.
The first goal of the night didn’t come until the final minute of the first period. Caleb Wyrostok gained the Edmonton line on left wing before firing a hard wrist shot from the left circle, beating Ronin Geraghty blocker side with his seventh of the year. Brady Birnie and Owen Pickering gathered assists on the goal.
Three shorthanded goals, Davies' hat trick lead Broncos over Oil Kings
The Swift Current Broncos (10-11-0-0) scored three shorthanded goals Friday night, and Josh Davies recorded his first career hat trick as the Broncos picked up a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings (4-19-1-0).
Davies first goal of the night came near the halfway mark of the first period. After Josh Filmon was able to work the puck out of his skates along the left-wing boards, Davies threw it on goal and it snuck past Kolby Hay for Davies’s sixth of the year.
Broncos blanked on home ice by Warriors
The Swift Current Broncos (9-11-0-0) racked up plenty of scoring chances against the Moose Jaw Warriors (13-8-0-0) Saturday night, but couldn’t solve Connor Ungar who turned in a 33-save shutout as the Broncos fell 6-0.
The Warriors jumped ahead early while shorthanded. Ryder Korczak fanned on his shot while on a shorthanded breakaway, but recovered the loose puck on the goal line and fed Brayden Yager in the slot who tapped it into the open net 3:25 into the first period.
Broncos comeback falls one goal short in Moose Jaw
The Swift Current Broncos (9-10-0-0) clawed their way back from a 5-1 deficit in the third period, but came up one goal short in a 5-4 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors (12-8-0-0) Friday night.
After getting through an early penalty kill the Broncos gave up the first goal of the game. Moose Jaw’s captain Denton Mateychuk took a pass at the left point before spotting Jagger Firkus in the slot and feeding him the puck. Firkus fired a shot off the post and in past the glove of Gage Alexander, giving Moose Jaw a 1-0 lead 5:27 into the game.
Broncos trade Ty Hurley to Seattle Thunderbirds, release Rayan Bettahar
The Swift Current Broncos announced today they have traded 2004-born forward Ty Hurley and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Seattle Thunderbirds in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The two 2025 picks are the same ones that were moved in the trade that saw Eric Van Impe come to Swift Current last season.
Broncos double up Wheat Kings on home ice
The Swift Current Broncos (9-9-0-0) received a three-point performance from Connor Hvidston and a 37-save outing from Gage Alexander to double up the Brandon Wheat Kings (7-11-2-0) Tuesday night.
Gage Alexander made a number of quality saves over the course of the opening 20 minutes as the Broncos had a hard time finding the legs offensively, being outshot 13-4 in the first period.
Broncos stymied in goaltender duel against Hurricanes
The Swift Current Broncos (8-9-0-0) got a stellar performance by Reid Dyck Saturday night, but Lethbridge Hurricanes (10-8-0-1) goaltender Harrison Meneghin was one better, turning aside 31 shots in a 2-1 Lethbridge win.
The Hurricanes had an early goal waived off. During a goal-mouth scramble, Dyck fell over backwards and the net was knocked off its moorings just moments before Jett Jones scored. The goal was reviewed by the officials and eventually waived off, keeping the game scoreless.
Alexander's 40 saves backstops Broncos over Pats
The Swift Current Broncos (7-8-0-0) received a sterling 40-save performance from Gage Alexander in a 5-2 win over the Regina Pats (7-8-0-1) Saturday night.
Alexander put on a stellar performance in the opening 20 minutes of the game, denying the Pats on numerous high-quality scoring chances to finish the opening period with 15 saves.
Both teams had breakway chances in the first period as well, with Tanner Howe hitting the post for Regina and Josh Davies lifting the puck over the net while shorthanded a few minutes later.
Penalty trouble costs Broncos in loss to Rebels
The Swift Current Broncos (6-8-0-0) got a little too undisciplined against the Red Deer Rebels (14-0-0-0) Friday night, and it cost them in a 4-1 loss at the InnovationPlex.
Swift Current had an excellent scoring chance just seconds after puck drop, but Brady Birnie was denied by Kyle Kelsey on a cross-ice chance deep in the Rebels zone.
