McGinley's overtime winner lifts Broncos over Giants

Sam McGinley scored 2:57 into overtime to give the Swift Current Broncos (6-7-0-0) their fourth win in a row, 5-4 over the Vancouver Giants (5-7-2-2) Wednesday night.

The game had a quick pace in the early going with a near five-minute stretch without a whistle shortly after puck drop. After the Broncos couldn’t capitalize on their first power play of the night, the Giants opened the scoring on a turnover behind the Swift Current net.

Ward's late goal lifts Broncos over Raiders

Mathew Ward celebrated his 100th career WHL game in style, scoring with 2:09 left in regulation to lift the Swift Current Broncos (5-7-0-0) to a 5-4 win over the Prince Albert Raiders (3-9-2-0) Saturday night.

The game remained scoreless until late in the opening frame. Shortly after the Broncos killed off a penalty, Hayden Pakkala skated down the left wing into the Broncos zone and centred the puck from the goal line.

Broncos score six unanswered in win over Royals

The Swift Current Broncos (4-7-0-0) gave up the game’s first goal against the Victoria Royals (2-10-2-0) on Friday night, but responded with six straight goals in a 6-1 win.

The game had a fast pace to begin as the two teams had a stretch of about five minutes without a whistle. The Royals displayed some impressive speed in the early going, forcing multiple turnovers and eventually opening the scoring.

Broncos hang on for 5-4 victory over Lethbridge

It was closer than they would have liked, but the Swift Current Broncos (3-7-0-0) fended off a late push by the Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-8-0-0) to hang on for a 5-4 victory Wednesday night.

The Broncos opened the scoring for just the second time this season off a 4-on-1 rush. After Gage Alexander poked the puck away on a chance in tight for Lethbridge, the rush turned back the other way for the odd-man rush.

Brady Birnie ranked by NHL Central Scouting for 2023 NHL draft

NHL Central Scouting released their preliminary rankings for the 2023 NHL Draft Tuesday morning, and Swift Current Broncos forward Brady Birnie was listed as a C-ranked skater.

Central Scouting ranks players as either ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ ranked skaters, with A-ranked skaters tabbed as potential first-round selections, B-ranked skaters as second-or-third-round selections and C-ranked skaters as fourth to sixth-round selections.

Lead slips as Broncos fall to Rebels

It was an unfortunate case of déjà vu for the Swift Current Broncos (2-6-0-0) Saturday night as a late goal in regulation by the Red Deer Rebels (7-0-0-0) saw the Broncos fall 4-3 for the second night in a row.

Swift Current got off to an excellent start, hemming the Rebels in their own zone for the opening 45 seconds of the game. It was a sign of things to come as the Broncos opened the scoring for the first time this season.

Late goal costs Broncos in loss to Regina

The Swift Current Broncos (2-5-0-0) and Regina Pats (6-4-0-0) appeared destined for overtime Friday night, but Connor Bedard scored with eight seconds left in regulation to lift the Pats to a 4-3 win.

It was a tough start to the game for the Broncos as the Pats opened the scoring in the first minute of the game. Stanislav Svozil carried the puck over the Broncos line on an odd-man rush before sending it across the ice for Sam Oremba who redirected it past Reid Dyck just 48 seconds into the game.

Broncos announce leadership group, Owen Pickering named captain

The Swift Current Broncos have finalized their leadership group for the 2022-23 season, and have named Owen Pickering as the newest captain in franchise history. Mathew Ward and Raphael Pelletier will serve as full-time alternate captains, while Caleb Wyrostok (home) and Josh Filmon (road) will rotate as alternates.

Pickering, from St. Adolphe, Man., is the first captain for the Broncos since Jaxan Kaluski wore the ‘C’ for the second half of the 2019-20 season.

Broncos acquire defenceman Adam McNutt from Regina

The Swift Current Broncos announced today that they have acquired 2003-born defenceman Adam McNutt from the Regina Pats in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

McNutt, from Saskatoon, was originally drafted 68th overall by the Prince Albert Raiders in the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft and has appeared in 77 career games to date, recording nine points (3-6-9). He has also racked up 124 career penalty minutes.

Broncos post significant financial loss

The Swift Current Broncos held their annual general meeting in the upstairs conference room of the InnovationPlex on October 4th, 2022, recapping the 2021-22 season.

The Broncos board of directors and membership re-elected two board members, Trent McCleary and Cam Hyswick. The team announced a deficiency or revenue over expenses (net loss) for the 2021/2022 season of $349,000.
