Your guide to the Portage-Lisgar by-election on Monday, June 19th

Monday, June 19th is election day in the Portage-Lisgar by-election. Eligible voters will have the chance to cast their ballot for one of five candidates vying to be the region's Member of Parliament. Why is there a by-election?
The by-election was prompted when former Portage-Lisgar M.P. Candice Bergen resigned her seat earlier this year. The by-election was announced Sunday, May 14th, with Monday, June 19th set as election day.

Total fire ban now in place in Morden, Winkler and R.M. of Stanley

A total fire and burn ban is now in place in Winkler, Morden and the R.M. of Stanley. The Winkler Fire Department and Morden Fire and Rescue announced the move Tuesday.

Morden Fire and Rescue Chief Andy Thiessen told PembinaValleyOnline, due to dry conditions and no significant rainfall in the forecast, a complete fire ban is now in effect.

Reckless driving leads to several charges for 23-year-old motorist

A 23-year-old driver appeared in Winnipeg court Monday after an incident in Morden on Saturday evening. 
    
Shortly after 9 p.m., police were notified of a possible impaired driver doing donuts in the parking lot of a local business. A second call reported the same vehicle speeding down Wilcocks Road. 
    
Police ran a check on the vehicle and turns out, it had been reported stolen.

"We have a strong message for families," says Bernier as supporters gather in Winkler Saturday

With the Portage-Lisgar by-election just over a week away, supporters of People's Party of Canada (PPC) candidate Max Bernier gathered at Winkler's Parkland Stage Saturday to show their support. The event, which was called Freedom Fest, included speeches by Bernier and several others, as well as activities for families in attendance.

Prior to the rally, earlier in the week, PembinaValleyOnline connected with the PPC leader for an interview regarding the campaign, and what he's hearing on the ground from voters.

19-year-old succumbs to workplace injuries

A 19-year-old man has died following a workplace accident on Thursday.
    
Pembina Valley RCMP were called to the scene - a construction site on Highway 306 in the Municipality of Rhineland - shortly before 1:30 p.m.
    
RCMP explain, a packer was loaded on to a flat deck trailer when it unexpectedly rolled off and struck the employee. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. 
    
RCMP and Workplace Safety and Health continue to investigate.
