Fires now banned in Hanover

The Rural Municipality of Hanover has implemented a fire ban. 

The move was announced Thursday afternoon and is effective immediately.

Hanover was the only municipality in southeastern Manitoba that did not have a fire ban. Earlier in the day, Premier Wab Kinew urged all Manitobans to refrain from starting fires, even though there was not a province-wide ban.

Residents in southeastern Manitoba are now dealing with multiple evacuation orders as a wildfire continues to spread through the Rural Municipality of Piney. The fire, identified as EA057, has already forced evacuations in Carrick, St. Labre, Florze, Badger, and, as of Wednesday evening, Woodridge. 

Manitoba Lung Association offers tips to protect lungs during smoke exposure

The entirety of southeast Manitoba continues to be under an air quality warning as wildfires persist.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says very poor air quality and reduced visibility can be expected at times. It warns that "during heavy smoke conditions, everyone's health is at risk regardless of age or health status."

Ruth Guenther nee Hamm, 87, of Winnipeg formerly of Morden, passed away Sunday, May 11th at Grace Hospital. She is survived by her husband David and 2 daughters. She was predeceased by her parents Henry and Tena Hamm, and 4 brothers. 
A memorial service for Ruth Guenther nee Hamm will be held Saturday, May 24th at 10:30am at Fort Garry Mennonite Brethren Church, 1771 Pembina Highway.
