Canadian youth struggle with making friends and bullying: UNICEF report
A global study from UNICEF suggests many Canadian kids are unhappy, with social struggles such as bullying and difficulty making friends among the sources of their anguish.
UNICEF’s 19th Report Card suggests one in five youth in Canada face frequent bullying, one in five are lonely and one in four struggle to make friends.
It blames bullying in particular for a drop in life satisfaction reported by 15-year-olds, down three percentage points to 76 per cent since 2018.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says new cabinet will act with 'urgency and determination'
Prime Minister Mark Carney shook up his cabinet Tuesday by moving some key players involved in Canada-U.S. relations into new positions and promoting 24 new faces in a move meant to signal change at the top.
While some were prominent figures in former prime minister Justin Trudeau's government — including Dominic LeBlanc, Mélanie Joly, Chrystia Freeland and François-Philippe Champagne — Carney froze out other prominent members of his predecessor's team.
Carney named 28 full ministers to his cabinet, which will meet for the first time on Wednesday.
Mateychuk thrilled to be selected by WHL's Vancouver Giants
Eastman Select standout Will Mateychuk was selected in the WHL Draft by the Vancouver Giants, the same team that earlier selected his cousin, making an already special day even better for the Mateychuk family.
"It means the world to me," a humble Mateychuk explains. "To be drafted to the WHL, it's a huge accomplishment. To be drafted by the same team as my cousin (Crosby Mateychuk), that's something special. It's not every day that you hear that two cousins are drafted into the WHL, let alone to the same team. Southeast Cancer Support Services 'overwhelmed' by outpouring of local love
Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS) is basking in an outpouring of community support.
Cindi Rempel Patrick says, a local greenhouse has partnered with the non-profit to create "Baskets of Hope."
"They've potted up to 100 baskets (with flowers)," she says. "Significantly, the colours have a connection to our logo... the lavender flowers symbolize serenity, devotion, loyalty, love, and well-being.
"The yellow flowers represent friendship, happiness, positivity and joy, and to celebrate a milestone."
MPI offering condensed Driver Z summer courses
Due to high demand, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is offering condensed summer courses for its Driver Z program.
Rather than the regular 12 week long course, it has been designed to be done in five weeks in July and August 2025.
It says the lessons will consist of two weeks of virtual courses, and three weeks of in-car lessons.
Hanover School Division trustee departs on personal leave
A Hanover School Division (HSD) trustee has departed on personal leave.
Danielle Funk is one of four trustees that were elected to represent ward three in the division, which is Steinbach. In a recent board meeting, it was announced she requested to go on personal leave.
Community rallies as wildfires force evacuations in RM of Piney
The Woodridge Community Centre has been operating as the designated reception site for residents who have been ordered to evacuate in the RM of Piney as a result of ongoing wildfires.
The municipality declared a state of emergency at 6 p.m. on Monday due to a fire that started between Carrick and Badger on Saturday.
Jets on brink after 3–1 loss to Stars in Game 4
The Winnipeg Jets find themselves on the brink of elimination after a 3–1 loss to the Dallas Stars in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series on Tuesday night.
Despite another strong start and a solid performance through much of the game, Winnipeg was once again stymied by Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger and undone by a Mikael Granlund hat trick. With the loss, the Jets now trail 3–1 in the best-of-seven series.
The series shifts back to Winnipeg for Game 5 on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. CDT.
Bird River wildfire draws closer to bible camp, evacuation order expands
Southland Church has shared a fire in the Bird River area has gotten closer to the bible camp it runs.
Tuesday afternoon on social media, the church urged community members to continue praying.
"The Fire is approximately 1km away from the camp and is moving in quickly. Your continued prayer for the camp is much need," it says in a Facebook post.
Sask. producers say bovine TB compensation inadequate
YORKTON, Sask. —Those affected by quarantines and eradication policies want more financial assistance from the federal government.
Efforts to trace the bovine tuberculosis case discovered last fall have put several farms in quarantine and under financial pressure.
The positive test found on a Saskatchewan cow at slaughter Nov. 29, 2024, brought with it numerous ramifications as a result of Canada’s tracing policies to ensure continued trade under international animal health rules.
