Province orders more evacuations in the Whiteshell

Our province has issued a mandatory evacuation order for several areas in South and North Whiteshell. 

Due to changing wildfire conditions, Manitoba Parks has issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents, cottagers, and commercial operators in the following areas:

South Whiteshell Evacuation Areas
Caddy Lake - Blocks 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 & 8

Green Bay Resort

West Hawk Lake - McDougall's Landing, Big Island Landing, Indian Bay

Florence Lake, Nora Lake, Ophir Siding

St Labre residents ordered to evacuate due to wildfires in RM of Piney

UPDATE on the wildfire in the RM of Piney

RM of Piney Emergency Operation Centre and Reeve, Wayne Anderson, released the following information at 2:30 pm, Tuesday, May 13. 

Anderson confirmed that the RM will remain in a State of Local Emergency until conditions warrant lifting.

That PR 203 from Badger to Carrick will remain closed until further notice. 

Evacuation orders have now been issued to residents living in the townsite of St. Labre. Anderson notes that crews are notifying residents.

More cottagers on standby for evacuation in the Whiteshell

More cottagers in the Whiteshell have been told to be ready for an evacuation order, as the result of an active wildfire burning near Ingolf, Ontario.

According to our province, an evacuation preparedness advisory has been issued for cottagers on the north side of West Hawk Lake, as well as Caddy Lake, Florence Lake, and Nora Lake. Residents in these areas are strongly encouraged to be ready for an evacuation, should conditions get worse. 

Several trails, water routes, portages, and backcountry campsites in Whiteshell Provincial Park are now closed until further notice.

Fire Chief responds to collision and reminds residents of fire ban

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a two-vehicle collision this morning at the intersection of Brandt Street and Reimer Avenue in Steinbach. 

Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews says the call came in around 8:30 a.m. 

“Single occupant in both vehicles, one person was taken to hospital. I'm not sure of the nature of the injuries. The second operator was released at the scene.” 

Dr. Digvir S. Jayas will be invested into the Order of Manitoba

A distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba will be invested into the Order of Manitoba this summer.

Dr. Digvir S. Jayas, an engineer and agrologist, has received multiple awards for his 30-year research and teaching career. He conducts research related to drying, handling and storing of grains and oilseeds and digital image processing for grading and processing operations in the Agri-Food industry.

PEI MP Heath MacDonald takes on the role of Agriculture Minister

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced his new cabinet today.

One of the new faces at the cabinet table will be 59 year old Heath MacDonald an MP from Prince Edward Island, as he takes on the role of Federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister.

MacDonald was first elected as an MP in 2021 after previously serving in the Provincial Legislature

 was left out of cabinet.

La Broquerie fire crews battle 750 acre blaze for 8 hours

A portion of land south of the Rural Municipality (RM) of La Broquerie continues to burn, but is under control, after fire crews battled the blaze for eight hours. 

After putting out a smaller fire on farmland Monday afternoon, chief of the La Broquerie Fire Department, JC Normandeau, says at 4:45 p.m., crews were called to a second between roads 25N and 27N, east of PR 302. 

Wildfires prompt evacuation order for Nopiming Provincial Park

An evacuation order has been issued for Nopiming Provincial Park as wildfire conditions continue to escalate. Our province has also declared a state of local emergency for Nopiming, Wallace Lake, South Atikaki, and Manigotagan River provincial parks. These parks will remain closed to the public until conditions improve.
