Roots of Hope brings suicide prevention framework to southern Manitoba

A national suicide prevention initiative called Roots of Hope is being developed in southern Manitoba, offering communities a new way to build supports based on local needs and priorities. 

“Roots of Hope is a framework meant to help communities build suicide prevention initiatives locally that fit their community, so it's very individualized,” says Lindsay Hainsworth, a community mental health worker with Southern Health-Santé Sud’s Mental Health and Addictions Program. 

Local Ag biz busy as farmers get ready for seeding in the southeast

The sun is shining, the ground is warming up, and out in the Prairies, farmers are gearing up for a busy seeding season. According to folks on the ground at LMS Ag north of Steinbach, things are shaping up nicely.

Mayor Funk praises community spirit at Pick Up and Walk

Steinbach’s streets, parks, and public spaces are a lot cleaner after the community came together once again for the annual Pick Up and Walk event Saturday morning.

The large-scale cleanup effort, organized in partnership with local churches, drew hundreds—possibly more than a thousand—volunteers from across the city and surrounding areas. Armed with garbage bags and wearing yellow t-shirts, participants fanned out across Steinbach to collect litter and beautify the community in a matter of hours.

Police issue warning as counterfeit cash circulates in Manitoba

Law enforcement is warning Manitobans to watch for a growing number of counterfeit Canadian bills, following a surge in fake currency reported since the start of the year.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Financial Crime Unit says it has seized over $12,000 in counterfeit cash during the first quarter of 2025—more than double the amount recorded during the same period last year.

Peter Janzen, 93, of Killarney passed away Tuesday, April 29th in Killarney. He is survived by his wife Lena, 1 daughter, 2 sons, and 1 son-in-law. He was predeceased by his first wife Mary and 1 daughter.  
A memorial service for Peter Janzen will be held Friday, May 9th at 11am at Killarney Mennonite Church with burial at Killarney Cemetery.

Claire Desorcy, 93, of La Broquerie passed away Monday, April 28th at Ste. Anne Hospital. She is survived by her husband Gilles, 2 daughters, and their families. 
The funeral Mass for Claire Desorcy will be held June 7th at 10:30am at St. Joachim Catholic Parish, La Broquerie with ash interment at the church cemetery.

Carney says he won't make a pact with NDP, confirms King Charles to launch Parliament

King Charles will visit Ottawa to deliver the speech from the throne at the end of this month in a show of support for Canadian sovereignty, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday.

The news came in his first press conference since leading the Liberals to a fourth straight mandate in Monday's election, where he laid out the priorities for his first few months, promising to "embark on the biggest transformation of our economy since the end of the Second World War."
