University of Manitoba recognizes 2025 Certificate of Merit honourees

The University of Manitoba recently honoured three well-deserving agricultural leaders with the 2025 Certificate of Merit, Cathey Day, Fred Greig, and Kim McConnell.

The Certificate of Merit is presented by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the School of Agriculture in recognition of leadership with agriculture, agri-food and community organizations and for outstanding service to the public at large.

Since 1981, the University of Manitoba’s Certificate of Merit 'has honoured over 95 individuals.

E-scooter hospitalizations on the rise; adult men most often injured

As the popularity of e-scooters continues to rise, so too does the number of injuries. 

That is according to Diana Craiovan, Program Lead for Hospital Data Advancement and Engagement with Canadian Institute for Health Information. The Institute recently released a report on the leading causes of injury-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits in Canada. Craiovan says the report shows a 32 per cent increase in e-scooter injuries from 2022/23 to 2023/24.

Meals on the Farm returns to celebrate local farmers

Meals on the Farm, presented by Steinbach Credit Union, is back again this summer, continuing a cherished tradition of bringing hot meals to hardworking farmers. 

Whether it’s planting, harvesting, feeding livestock, or fixing machinery at the crack of dawn, farmers are working around the clock, often through weekends, holidays, and extreme weather. 

That’s where Meals on the Farm comes in. We are bringing a meal from the Mennonite Heritage Village right to the field, barn, or machine shed, as our way of saying thank you to the farmers who work so hard.

Kathy Falk nee Peters, 68, of the Gretna area formerly of Reinland, passed away Thursday, July 24th at Lake of the Woods District Hospital, Kenora. She is survived by her husband Ken Falk, their children Nathan (Cheryl) Falk, and Daryl Falk, as well as 2 grandsons, 1 sister and 2 brothers. She was predeceased by her parents Peter W. J. and Nettie Peters, and 1 sister.

Travolta film closes highway in southeast

The filming of a movie starring John Travolta, will close a highway in southeastern Manitoba all day Monday.

November 1963 is currently being filmed in Manitoba and 2 Days Pictures Manitoba Inc. has indicated that a portion of Provincial Road (PR) 305, east of Ste. Agathe will be closed as a result.

The stretch from PR 200 to Loeppky Road was already closed on Sunday and will be closed on Monday from 10 am to midnight.
