U15 AA Carillon Sultans bringing depth and defense to provincials
After a strong season of growth and development, the U15 AA Carillon Sultans are looking to bring the heat to provincials starting today.
Coach Stu Friesen says it was a bit of a rocky week preparing, but they're feeling good about where they are as a team. "We had one of our practices cancelled this week, which was kind of downfall, but we did get a good practice in. Our team, we've been on a five or six game winning streak the last little while. I like our chances, but it'll be stiff competition this weekend."
Residential construction in Steinbach more than doubles year over year
The City of Steinbach is reporting a surge in residential construction this year, issuing building permits worth nearly $57 million during the first six months of 2025 — a 57 per cent increase over the same period last year.
Mayor Earl Funk announced during a recent council meeting that permit values for June alone totalled $9.5 million, including nearly $9 million in residential and $650,000 in industrial, school, church, and commercial construction.
Beating the heat: Summer safety tips for older adults
As the weather heats up in southeastern Manitoba, older adults are being reminded to take extra care.
Mélanie Brémaud, senior resource coordinator with Seine River Services for Seniors, says staying cool is key to maintaining health and independence during the summer months.
While not everyone has access to an air-conditioned home, Brémaud says there are other ways to keep safe during warmer weather.
That includes drinking lots of water, using fans, and having a safety buddy.

Bright, yellow fields have become like crown jewels in southeastern Manitoba's crop-lush landscape—bursting with sun-like splendor as summer quickly plows along.
But what exactly is growing in those brilliantly golden fields? That's canola. Not only is it a visually stunning crop, but it's also critically important to Manitoba and to Canada as a whole.

Three workers, one from Manitoba, emerge from B.C. mine after 'meticulously executed' rescue
Three workers who were trapped in a remote northern British Columbia mine have been rescued after more than 60 hours underground.
Red Chris mine operator Newmont Corp. said the three men were safely bought to the surface at about 10:40 p.m. on Thursday.
It said Kevin Coumbs, Darien Maduke and Jesse Chubaty — contractors for B.C.-based Hy-Tech Drilling — were in good health and spirits after being trapped underground by two rockfalls on Tuesday morning.
"This was a carefully planned and meticulously executed rescue plan," the company said in a statement.

Villa Youville launched the annual Scooter Parade through the streets of Ste. Anne.
After a rainy day on Tuesday, the scooter parade was rescheduled, bringing balloons and music into the sunshine of Thursday.
Residents and staff of Villa Youville, as well as the Phoenix cheer squad, prepared for the parade with pom-poms in hand.
Agriculture Disaster declarations being reported across the Prairies
The month of July has brought cool, wet weather and smoke from forest fires to the majority of the Prairies.
Rain has been reported in some of the drier areas, but its coming too late for drought stressed crops and forage, with RM's across Manitoba, and Saskatchewan and Alberta County's now declaring agricultural disaster areas.
