Jolys Regional Library in St Pierre officially opens its doors at new location

After a year of uncertainty and big changes, the Jolys Regional Library has officially opened in its new location at 479 Turenne Street, around the corner from its former home attached to École Héritage Immersion School.

And if the crowd at Tuesday's grand opening BBQ was any indication, this little library means a lot to the people of St. Pierre.

Life-jackets and swimming with a buddy stressed during National Drowning Prevention Week

Lifesaving Society Manitoba is urging the public not to swim alone.

Executive Director Lynne Stefanchuk says that is the message they want to get across during National Drowning Prevention Week. Stefanchuk says this annual event happens the third week of July, during what is known to be the time of year for the most drownings across Canada. In Manitoba, 72 per cent of all drownings happen between May and September. She says there are steps that swimmers can take to prevent drownings.

Nopiming reopens as wildfire threat lessens

Nopiming Provincial Park is now back open to all permanent residents, cottagers and commercial operators. The move happened Friday morning at 9 o'clock. According to our province, Provincial Road (PR) 314 and PR 304 are also now back open to traffic.

The Manitoba Wildfire Service (MWS) says the moves are possible, even though Fire EA061 remains out of control. That is because suppression efforts allow for the reopening.

Thunderstorm risk looms over Manitoba Friday as ‘capping’ creates unpredictable conditions

A warm and humid air mass will move through the province today, brewing up all the ingredients needed to create severe thunderstorms.

However, something called capping is making it hard for meteorologists to predict exactly what will happen.

Sentencing for Freedom Convoy leaders Lich, Barber scheduled for Oct. 7

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, two leaders of the Freedom Convoy protest, are scheduled to be sentenced for mischief on Oct. 7 in an Ottawa courtroom.

In addition to lengthy prison sentences, the Crown wants to seize Barber's truck, which was used in the protest.

A forfeiture hearing on that matter is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Ontario Court Justice Heather Perkins-McVey said Thursday she wants to rule on the mischief sentence and truck forfeiture at the same time so that she does not deliver "piecemeal" decisions.

One home destroyed after wildfire enters town in northern Manitoba

Ash and embers rained down on the northwestern Manitoba town of Leaf Rapids when an out-of-control wildfire entered the community Wednesday evening resulting in the damage of one home and several abandoned buildings.

Firefighters have been in the community for weeks establishing fire guards, managing vegetation and setting up value protection on critical infrastructure, but "intense fire behaviour" that ramped up over the course of a few hours prompted crews to temporarily leave the town.
