Hindley fires back at NDP criticisms of healthcare

Swift Current MLA Everett Hindley has offered his insights into claims from an NDP opposition member on Saskatchewan's healthcare. 

Hindley has taken issue with some of the remarks made by MLA Meara Conway, the Shadow Minister for Rural and Remote Health, during her stop in Swift Current on Thursday. He previously served as the Minister for Rural and Remote Health from 2020 to 2023, then served as the Minister of Health from 2023 until 2025, where after the provincial election he was made the Minister for Education. 

Patzer elected to third term for southwest Saskatchewan

Jeremy Patzer has been re-elected as the Conservative MP for Swift Current-Grasslands-Kindersley.

Patzer won his riding with about 83 per cent of the vote (over 30,000), beating Liberal candidate William Caton, NDP candidate Alex McPhee, and Independent Maria Rose Lewans.

Thanking each one of his voters, Patzer also extended gratitude to his volunteers and staff.

Additional information on the Dekowny sentencing

James Dekowny has received his sentence after nearly a year of court proceedings.

Dekowny first was charged in May of 2024. He was sentenced to 12 months of house arrest on Wednesday afternoon in Swift Current Provincial Court.  Dekowny plead guilty to fraud under $5,000 stemming from his time as the executive director of the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation.

Cabri invites everyone to the Community Garage Sale on Saturday

Folks are invited out to the Cabri Community Hall this Saturday for their Community Garage Sale. 

Locals and members of the surrounding community have been donating items for the sale from their own garages, attics, and storage units. The goal is to sell these items to raise money for the Hall, ensuring they can keep the lights on, the floors waxed, and the paint pristine. 

Wendy Johnson, the Town of Cabri representative on the Community Hall board, has been organizing this event, and is excited for the community to come together on Saturday to show their support. 

Miry Creek Golf Course makeover in the works

A new era is beginning for the Miry Creek Golf Course. 

The Town of Cabri recently announced it is beginning plans to revitalize the Highway 32 adjacent course. This came after a vote between three projects, including the beautification of the downtown as well as revamping the lower playground space. 

According to Town of Cabri community development director, Cheyenne Bradford, it wasn't even a close vote. 

"The Miry Creek Golf Course won, and it was absolutely one-sided," said Bradford.

Thawing conditions prompt reminder for winter weights

Truck drivers and other heavy haulers will want to mark their calendars, cause the winter weights on secondary highways are fast approaching lifting. 

March 14th is the official deadline for the removal of the winter weights, meaning that secondary highways will no longer be rated for the same weights as primary highways, like the Trans-Canada Highway. 

David Horth, director of communications for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, that the monitoring of the highways is ongoing, and that the deadline date may come sooner, or later than expected. 

Riverhurst ice crossing continues operating

The Riverhurst ice road is open for the time being, but it's only a matter of time and sunshine. 

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways currently has the ice road crossing open, with a total weight limit of 4,540 kilograms in place. 

Dan Palmer, a senior communications consultant with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, is asking that people regularly check the Highway Hotline before heading to the crossing. 

"Check it even on your return journey," said Palmer. "We all know weather and conditions can change quickly in this province."

Dekowny's defence promises to deliver after another adjournment

Another hold-up in the resolution of Jim Dekowny's case.

Wednesday saw Darren Kraushaar representing Dekowny remotely over the phone. The lawyer asked for yet another adjournment to March 12. He promised that they were nearing a resolution with the crown.

Judge J.F. Jacobson noted that he had heard similar promises at the previous two court dates for the former executive director of the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Health Care Foundation.

Coyotes increasing part of urban landscape during harsh winter

With the harsh winter, increasing numbers of wildlife are seeking food and refuge in urban areas. The numbers of coyote sighting will increase proportionally, and reports throughout the city, most recently in Humboldt’s southeast side have been more frequent. In smaller surrounding communities, wildlife encounters, including coyotes, have been frequent.
