NWHU reports ‘extreme increase’ in COVID-19, masks strongly recommended

Leadership with the Northwestern Health Unit is sounding the alarm about the spread of COVID-19 in the Kenora area, and is once again ‘strongly’ recommending that masks return in indoor spaces.

The Northwestern Health Unit held an impromptu media session on August 5 with regional media members, with an update from the region’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kit Young Hoon.

Aug. 8 Sports Update

Oliver and Jason Gibbins of Morson, ON are the big winners after KBI 2022.

The two anglers posted 57.18 lbs of bass over the three-day tournament, edging out last year’s winners Ian Waterer and Motei Demers of Selkirk with 54.61 lbs. Kenora’s Jamie Bruce and Bryan Gustafson placed third with 53.24 lbs.

Staffing crisis continues at Kenora Hospital, Emergency Room

Leadership with the Lake of the Woods District Hospital say they’re continuing to navigate their ongoing staffing shortages with ‘white-knuckles’ as they try to hang on and survive the summer season.

President and CEO Ray Racette held a regional media conference August 5 to update their ongoing situation, which includes a shortage of general hospital staff and physicians, as well as a shortage of staff for the Emergency Department during the hospital’s busiest months of the year.

Treaty #3 Youth dominate at the Ontario Summer Indigenous Games

A large group of Treaty #3 youth athletes recently returned home after a very successful trip to Ottawa.  

Tania Cameron and her group of 60 youth athletes and 8 coaches returned home from the recent Ontario Summer Indigenous Games in Ottawa last week. Four volleyball teams and three basketball teams all came home with some hardware.  

Salvation Army helps local school children

350 students in the Kenora area will be getting some help from the salvation army this school year.  

In a press release from the Salvation Army, the organization announced that they will be distributing 350 backpacks full of needed supplies to students from eight Kenora schools.  

The backpacks will each contain a reusable water bottle, thermal lunch kit, and other school necessities. 

Parliamentary committee to begin study of RCMP's use of cellphone spyware

A parliamentary committee will begin exploring the RCMP’s use of spyware on Monday, diving deeper into an issue that's sounded alarms for privacy and civil liberties groups across the country.

The House of Commons ethics and privacy committee called for a summer study after the RCMP revealed its use of tools that covertly obtain data from devices like phones and computers. 

David Sinclair

David Sinclair, age 28, of Dryden, Ontario passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. David was born February 23, 1994. 

A visitation for David will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a wake service from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
