Aug. 4 Sports Update

The Kenora Bass International, the region’s biggest fishing tournament, kicks off today.

The three-day tournament will put anglers to the test as they compete for the top prize of $20,000. Weigh-ins for day one will go at 4 p.m. this afternoon under the Whitecap Pavilion. Ian Waterer and Motei Demers took home the trophy last year.

McLeod Park work begins, first step in Harbourfront redevelopment

The transformation of Kenora’s McLeod Park has begun, as the city takes a step towards a $25 million redevelopment of the Harbourfront area.

Sierra Construction began their work today at McLeod Park, which will include the development of a new playground and picnic area, as well as landscaping, signage and drainage improvement work.

Kenora City Council race heats up, McGrath, Manson announce their campaigns

The race for Kenora City Council is continuing to heat up, more candidates have announced that they are running. Ten people are now aiming for one of the six seats on Kenora City Council 

Barbara Manson is running for a seat on Kenora City Council. A candidate bio has not been published for Manson at this time but the candidate did say via Facebook that she “wants to see an improved Kenora for residents and visitors alike.”  

NWHU starts Blue-Green algae tests at Ghost Lake

Residents are asked to avoid the Ghost Lake area while water testing takes place.

The Northwestern Health Unit and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks are working to test Dryden’s Ghost Lake for toxic blue-green algae. Residents are asked to avoid the public beach area for a minimum of two weeks while testing occurs.

Blue-green algae is created through phosphorus in the lakes, and blue-green algae typically blooms in the summer and fall in shallow, slow-moving and warm water.

Charest, Aitchison, Baber make final pitch to Conservative members, plea for unity

Jean Charest spent the last official debate of the federal Conservative leadership race on Wednesday stressing that his experience as a political leader is what the party needs to unite.

But with six weeks left in the contest, the former Quebec premier, who once led the erstwhile federal Progressive Conservative party, would not say whether he plans to remain within the Conservative Party of Canada if another candidate is revealed as the winner on Sept. 10.

Aug. 3 Sports Update

In Kenora Slo Pitch Action, Northern Harbour took out Dunnit 18 to 6, while Bob’s Burgers beat out CUPE 21 to 11.

Hockey Northwestern Ontario has named Kenora’s Lucas Pavey as their Most Promising Official. Pavey’s a 16-year-old Level 1 official who joined the program in 2018.

“Lucas took to officiating right away and looked very natural with his signals, his confidence, and his communication skills right from his first game,” wrote Hockey Northwestern Ontario, in a prepared release.

Gas prices drop by a cent in Kenora

Gas prices continue to drop in northwestern Ontario, this time, by one cent.  

According to GassBuddy.com, several gas stations in Kenora and Dryden are reporting a one-cent drop in fuel prices. 

The price of one litre of fuel is 179.9 at some stations in Kenora and Dryden, others are still charging between 180.9 - 181.9 per litre of fuel.
