Hot weather leads to sweat, delays for Canadian travellers in Europe

Trevor Norris is used to hot summer weather, being from the Prairies. But his trip to England this week — one of many European countries facing record temperatures — has left him battling train delays and searching high and low for some sort of air-conditioned refuge.

"Nowhere in England seems to have AC," Norris said.

"I went into a pub and everyone was standing outside with their beers after ordering ... because it was too hot inside the pub itself. I was in there for maybe 10 minutes ordering drinks and my legs were drenched. It was that bad."

Traffic stop leads to drug trafficking charges against a novice Sioux Lookout driver

A Sioux Lookout traffic stop led to multiple drug trafficking charges.  

Members of the Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police conducted a traffic stop on Tuesday, July 19, which led to the discovery of a novice driver in possession of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.  

As a result, 19-year-old Alexander CLOUTIER-WALKER, of Sioux Lookout, has been arrested and charged with the following offences:

The Kenora community is banding together to support two pet owners experiencing a tragedy.

Kelley Morrell says his dog Penny and his daughter’s dog Onyx were outside playing when Kelley noticed both dogs exhibiting strange behaviour, which was quickly worsening. Kelley says he was immediately concerned and rushed both dogs to the vet.

Melillo offers comments of transportation infrastructure following historic storm

This historically wet summer has illuminated serious vulnerabilities in some of northwestern Ontario’s transportation infrastructure, Eric Melillo says more federal funding would help.  

In an interview with the QMorning Show, Eric Melillo, MP for Kenora, commented on some of the impacts of this most recent historic rain storm. Tuesday’s storm caused flooding, and multiple road closures and even created a massive sinkhole in Highway 17 by Richard Lake.  

July 22 Sports Update

The Kenora Rowing Club and Garrow Park will be host to the 117th annual North West International Rowing Association’s Championship Regatta this weekend. Members from across Canada and the US are getting together for two days full of events, with an awards banquet set for Saturday night.

The Edmonton Elks look to halt the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers' perfect start to the CFL season tonight at Commonwealth Stadium. The Bombers, the two-time defending Grey Cup champions, are 6-and-0 to start the season. The host Elks are 2-and-4.

***On July 22, 2022, at approximately 5:30 pm, KOLLY was located and was in good health.***

The Kenora OPP is looking for public assistance in locating missing Lucille Kolly.

The 59-year-old was last seen by her family on Thursday morning. Police say she was last seen in Kenora. 

She is described as Caucasian, 4'10, 110 lbs with blonde hair and brown eyes. No clothing descriptors are known at this time.

She may be driving a brown 2005, Ford Escape with Ontario plate 68L M46.

Mamakwa heading to Edmonton to meet Pope Francis

Pope Francis is coming to Canada and one local indigenous politician is set to meet him.  

Sol Mamakwa, NDP Deputy Leader, critic for Indigenous and Treaty relations, and MPP for the Kiiwetinoong riding, is travelling from northwestern Ontario to Edmonton, to meet with Pope Francis while he is on a Papal Visit to the former Residential Schools in Maskwacis.  

Section of Second Avenue South closed until September

The City of Kenora is advising the public that Titan Contractors (Kenora) Ltd. are completing surface, water and sanitary sewer works on Second Avenue South from Fifth Street South to Sixth Street South until September 23.  

During this time, this area will be closed to all traffic during construction activities with traffic detours in place via Third Avenue South.  

Ex-Kenora cop sentenced to 10 years in U.S. prison

A former member of the Kenora OPP has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release after a sexual abuse of two minors case in Minnesota.

Court documents state that on June 22, 2018, 33-year-old Canadian Brady John Hillis, now 37, was at the Fortune Bay Resort and Casino on the Bois Forte Indian Reservation when he was captured on security video engaging in sexual contact with two victims who were under the age of 12.

Hillis plead guilty to the offence on January 18, 2022.
