REOPENED: Washout closes Hwy 17

Highway 17 has reopened.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) reports highway 17 is closed due to a washout causing a substantial hole in the highway.  

The highway closure, which was reported at 03:43 a.m., is by Richard Lake in Kenora near distance marker 108 and stretches only within this immediate location. 

No detour is available. 

Highway 71 has now reopened after a closure earlier this morning.

Parole board to hear from truck driver in deadly Humboldt Broncos crash

A parole hearing is scheduled to take place today for a former truck driver who caused the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu was sentenced to eight years after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving charges for the 2018 crash that killed 16 and injured 13.

Singh went through a stop sign at a rural Saskatchewan intersection and drove into the path of the junior hockey team's bus as it was on its way to a playoff game.

Sidhu, who has been serving his sentence at a prison in Bowden, Alta., is asking to be released pending possible deportation.

500 customers still without power from Sunday’s storm

Hundreds of homes in northwestern Ontario are still without power after Sunday night’s severe thunderstorm ripped through the region, and there’s no timeline on when power will be restored.

“This storm caused significant damage to some of our equipment due to trees that came down. There’s a lot of work to do to repair local infrastructure in the area,” explains Hydro One Spokesperson, Alicia Sayers.

Erna was born in Teublitz, Germany on June 8th, 1929 and just celebrated her 93rd birthday. She married Ted Mandl in 1951 and together they immigrated to Canada in 1955.

Brian J. Fetherston 

Brian Fetherston of Kenora, Ont. passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital with family by his side. He was 67 years old.

Brian is lovingly remembered by his four siblings: Bob (May), Susan (Mike), Patty (Rob) and Garry (Gloria). He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews: Alexis, Troy, Amanda, Jamie, Gregory, Ryan and Jason. He was also a great uncle to 9 and a great great uncle to 1.

Brian was predeceased by his parents Mary (2019) and Bob (2004) Fetherston.

With her husband John, sister Jean and niece Gillian by her side Linda passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 71.

She leaves to mourn her passing is her husband of 45 years, John, daughter Amanda, sisters Jean Baxter and Elaine Kozar.  Also her in-laws, Pat Lunny, Terry and Carol Lunny, Jim and Carol Lunny, Ron and Liz Lunny and Albert Magnum.

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Orys Marie Romaniuk on Monday July 11, 2022 after a brief illness.

She was predeceased by her Father, Emil, Her Mother, Olga, her sister Evelyn and her brother Arthur.
Orys had no children of her own, but her niece Daria Sprague and her nephew Terry Zurkan grew up with Orys in the family home.  Orys was like a second mother to them.
