Capitals defeat Jets 5-2 behind four-goal second period

Charlie Lindgren really appreciated it when the Washington Capitals mounted a four-goal lead in Sunday’s second period against the Winnipeg Jets.

The netminder showed his thanks by foiling Winnipeg’s comeback attempt for a 5-2 Washington victory.

“To score four goals, as a goalie you love it,” Lindgren said. “It’s just a credit to our guys again for competing tonight, working hard, putting the puck in the net.

“Winnipeg obviously pushed back towards the end of the second. They pushed in the third, we hung tough, so good win for us.”

Deputy Chief Pratt promoted as Readman leaves Kenora Fire

The City of Kenora has a new Fire Chief after Kent Readman quietly stepped down earlier this month.

Deputy Fire Chief David Pratt has been named as the Kenora Fire and Emergency Services’ new Chief, effective December 5, and will be responsible for all aspects of the service and the city’s Emergency Management Program.

“The fire service finds itself in a season of change,” says Pratt. “I am honoured to have the opportunity to lead the dedicated, professional and well-trained staff who are ready to help keep our community safe.”

'I don't think we're done yet:' Bombers coach O'Shea weighs in on new three-year deal

Wade Miller knew he was talking to a winner when he first interviewed Mike O’Shea in 2013.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers president and chief executive officer told the story at a press conference Friday, where he and O’Shea talked about the three-year contract extension the head coach had recently signed through the 2025 season.

That first interview took place with Blue Bombers general manager Kyle Walters in the Toronto airport, a city where O’Shea had been the Argonauts’ special teams co-ordinator for four seasons.

Quebec judge authorizes class-action lawsuit against 'addictive' Fortnite video game

A Superior Court judge has authorized a lawsuit brought by Quebec parents who allege their children became addicted to the popular online video game Fortnite.

Justice Sylvain Lussier issued the ruling on Wednesday after hearing arguments in July regarding the class-action request from three parents who described how their children had symptoms of severe dependence after playing the game.

Highway 17 closed to Manitoba border

The Ministry of Transportation reports that Highway 17 is closed in both directions between Kenora and the Manitoba border after a collision.

MTO’s 511 service says all lanes are closed between the Manitoba border and Highway 17A’s West Junction, traffic control is in place and all drivers are asked to use caution in the area.

The OPP is asking all drivers to either stay in Kenora or stay in Winnipeg today, as the closure is expected to take multiple hours. 

Two charged with $450,000 of drugs in Sioux Lookout

The Sioux Lookout OPP has taken nearly half-a-million dollars worth of illegal drugs off of the streets of northwestern Ontario.

On December 7, officers with the OPP and Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service executed a search warrant at a King Street residence in Sioux Lookout, where officers seized methamphetamine, cocaine, oxycodone, $3,300 in cash, two stolen televisions and a stolen fetal heart rate monitor.

Céline Dion says she has 'stiff person syndrome.'  Here's what that means

Canadian superstar Céline Dion's Instagram announcement that she has been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome is sparking questions about the rare and widely unknown disease. 

The condition is a "neurological disorder with features of an autoimmune disease," according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in the U.S.  

The name doesn't do justice to the pain and life-changing symptoms the syndrome causes, said Tara Zier, founder of the Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation.
