Health Unit: 1 in 7 families going without food in NWO

The Northwestern Health Unit says 1 in 7 families in northwestern Ontario are struggling to put food on the table each day – and the issue is only going to get worse.

According to the results of a Northwestern Health Unit study done in the spring, the NWHU says the average cost to feed a family of four in northwestern Ontario is now $299 per week – or about $1,300 per month.

Work on Matheson Street to continue into next week

The City of Kenora says drivers can expect delays near Seven Generations through the next week as crews continue roadway repairs on Matheson Street South.

The city says the sewer and water service installation work is expected to wrap up on December 16. Until then, Matheson Street South from McLellan Avenue to First Street North is closed down to all traffic, with detours in place. The work is causing delays each morning at the Seven Gens' intersection, due to the detour.

Calls from the daughters of a slain Indigenous woman to bring her remains home from a landfill that police in Winnipeg won't search turned into a rallying cry Wednesday to end the violence against their women and girls.

Cambria Harris, speaking before an Assembly of First Nations gathering in Ottawa, says her mother, Morgan, was a "bright and loving soul" who had her life stolen by a "monster."

The 39-year-old mother and grandmother is one of four victims police believe were killed by 35-year-old Jeremy Skibicki, now facing first-degree murder charges.

After nearly six months of negotiations, the Ontario government and the Canadian Union of Public Employees found common ground and have ratified their new agreement to keep education workers and children in the classroom.

The new deal came after the two parties reached a tentative deal on November 20 to avoid CUPE’s second protest, with members voting 73 per cent in favour of the deal by December 5.

NWO sees $60,000 in Restart funding

The federal and provincial governments are providing about $60,000 to municipalities in northwestern Ontario, as communities continue to recover from the effects of COVID-19.

The Ontario government says $505 million in funding will be split between 107 municipalities in Ontario to help municipal transit systems with revenue losses, operating expenses, provincial transit priority projects and providing on-demand transit services.

Lorraine Rose Powassin

On December 2, 2022 at the age of 71, Yayanotook, Lorraine Rose Powassin of the Eagle Clan, or Doak, mother, mamanon, sister, aunt, friend, colleague and Bannock maker, passed away peacefully at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Doak was born to Frank and Louise Powassin on March 16, 1951.

Water main work closes parts of Donbrock Drive

Residents in the Donbrock Drive neighbourhood are warned of an ongoing road closure.

The City of Kenora says due to water main repairs, Donbrock Drive at address #62 will be closed to all traffic until further notice.

Donbrock Drive is a loop located off Airport Road, attached to Dean Street and Kenneth Street.

The city thanks the public for their patience and cooperation, and drivers are reminded to always slow down and move over near working construction crews.
