Liberals to hike GST rebates, help with rent payments in new affordability plan

The federal government intends to temporarily hike GST rebate cheques in a bid to ease some of the hurt of inflation for lower-income Canadians.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce a three-pronged plan to address affordability at the Liberal cabinet retreat in Vancouver today.

Cabinet ministers are gathering ahead of the fall sitting of Parliament with the economy and the cost-of-living crisis top of mind.

New air passenger protection rules come into effect Thursday

New Air Passenger Protection Regulations go into effect today. 

The update comes as the Canadian Transport Agency tries to close a loophole that left some passengers unable to secure cash refunds after pandemic-related flight cancellations.

Starting Thursday, airlines will be required to issue a full refund for cancellations and delays if passengers are not placed on a new flight within 48 hours, including for reasons outside of the airline's control. 

Suspect in Saskatchewan killings went into medical distress, died after arrest: RCMP

Mounties say Myles Sanderson, a suspect in a deadly series of stabbings in Saskatchewan, went into medical distress a short time after he was taken into custody.

RCMP say Sanderson had stolen a truck in the town of Wakaw and was arrested in the vehicle.

The 32-year-old was then pronounced dead at a Saskatoon hospital.

Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore says the RCMP has requested an independent investigation into the circumstances of Sanderson's death.

A dangerous persons alert ended Wednesday just before 4 p.m. when the Saskatchewan RCMP announced that Myles Sanderson was located and taken into police custody near Rosthern, Sask. around 3:30 p.m. 

This ended a manhunt that began early Sunday as multiple reports came in of stabbings on James Smith Cree Nation and the nearby village of Weldon.

Source says suspect in Saskatchewan killings dead after police took him into custody

A massive four-day manhunt came to an end north of Saskatoon on Wednesday as RCMP took into custody Myles Sanderson, a fugitive suspect in a deadly series of stabbings that left an entire region on edge and families immersed in grief.

A source with knowledge of the investigation said Sanderson died after he was taken into custody. RCMP were preparing to hold an evening news conference.

Taneeka Bebe Delaronde, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 19, 2022 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Taneeka is survived by her parents Tarl Delaronde and Loni Brun, siblings Nevaeh Delaronde, Nylah Delaronde, Julian Delaronde, Flower Payash, Kasyn Brun, Valeryn Smith, Bella Smith and Magdeline Brun, grandparents Ernest Delaronde, Valentina herbert, Harold Brun Sr., as well as numerous aunts, uncles and relatives too numerous to mention.

‘Big gaps to fill’ with students returning to a ‘normal’ school year

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board’s new Director of Education, Christy Radbourne, already has a list of priorities to tackle in the 2022-2023 school year – the first ‘normal’ school year in three years.

Radbourne stepped into her new role yesterday, the same day the students returned to the classroom in northwestern Ontario.
