Are you nearsighted? Probably.  

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common condition where the eye adjusts itself to make it easier to see up close. Over time, this tends to make distance vision blurry. Management of this condition is the focus, no pun intended, at Sage Creek Eye Centre.  

“We’re seeing this condition start to creep up with younger and younger ages due to our setting,” says Doctor Kelly Enns, owner and optometrist at Sage Creek Eye Centre. “Being on tablets and cell phones, reading a ton, and indoor time in general.”

More than 50 years later, the company boasts a workforce of 65, including 15 lawyers, and a reputation for providing an exceptional level of legal services to clients in southeastern Manitoba. 

It wouldn’t be Canada Day in Vita unless there was a rodeo, wrestling, concerts, kids’ activities, a baseball tournament, mini car racing, a parade and fireworks.

If it seems like a lot, it’s because it is – especially for a community of approximately 500 residents, about 40 km from Steinbach. But Canada Day celebrations have been a big deal in Vita for many years, and with the 2024 holiday falling on a Long Weekend Monday, they’re about to get even bigger. And better.

If it feels somewhat different to walk through the doors of Steinbach Pharmasave, it might be because so many faces are familiar. Or because the staff’s positive demeanor is a top-down dynamic. Or because a customer-first approach ensures each client is treated like a person, and not a number.

Or, maybe it’s a bit of everything.

Steinbach’s country radio station is celebrating its 10th birthday today, marking a decade of bringing local stories and country music to the southeast.

Hitting the airwaves on June 19, 2014, the station has remained focused on what happens between the songs, featuring the voices of our friends, neighbours and community leaders.

While he wasn't the mayor at the time of the station's launch, current Steinbach Mayor, Earl Funk says the mix of musical genre and local-mindedness has contributed to COUNTRY 107's success. 

Anyone who has undergone a home or cottage building project will know first-hand the sometimes considerable wait times associated with the design phase. It’s a province-wide issue, and one Marshall Drafting & Design was established to help address.

For every childcare space in Steinbach and the surrounding area, three or four children are currently in need of one. Kinder Korner, for example, has a preschool waiting list that recently surpassed 400.

“Steinbach is a bit of a childcare desert,” says Dana Cyrenne. “The need is so great that we thought it was time for us to be proactive and start looking at what we can do to offer the community some more spaces.”

When Jo Unger opened Steinbach’s Dairy Queen on June 5, 1989, she instantly became a plumber, electrician and mechanic.

“I couldn’t afford to hire people to do that work for me,” she recalls. “I had to do that myself.”

Unger, who was enrolled in the University of Manitoba’s Certified General Accounting program at the time, paused her studies to open the Dairy Queen. For three years she worked every day, open to close, and frequently dipped into her savings account to keep the business afloat.
