He may be a software whiz, but for Matt Wieler it’s still all about the people – and their businesses. 

“Coming from a banking background, I really enjoyed that moment where I could hit the ‘approved’ button and watch the joy in someone’s face,” says Wieler, now the owner-operator of Steinbach-based Books in Balance. “I’d be in the numbers, in the credit scores, and doing all the math. But it was wonderful watching a human’s light switch go on. They’d go from maybe not having a house to having a house, and it would be life-changing.” 

The Steinbach Chamber of Commerce presents Small Business Week, October 20th to 26th!  

Tessa Masi and Lindsey Banman of the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce invite one and all to join with their community to celebrate the local businesses that have made Steinbach a thriving commercial hub.  

“We want to bring awareness to all the small businesses,” Masi elaborates. “We want to encourage people to buy local, and we just want to celebrate them- we have so many entrepreneurs that are running small businesses here, and that is enough to warrant a celebration!” 

Earlier this year, Embody Wellness Studio and Clinic went through a name change. Formerly Muscle Matters, it was a large leap name-wise, but truly they were rebranding to match the services they had grown to offer.  

Lindsay Penner owns the beautifully burgeoning esthetics studio located in downtown Steinbach. She reveals that more exciting changes have naturally grown from rebranding.  

Steinbach Christian School (SCS) is celebrating 75 years of providing faith-based education. This journey reflects the school’s commitment to faith, family, and community. The milestone is a celebration of the past and a promise of hope for the future.  Board Chair Travis Neufeld notes “There is no doubt that the relative success of communities in southeast Manitoba is built on the Christian values shared by our parents and grandparents. Understanding what has made us successful is important for the next generation to also achieve success.”  

In the next few days, families and friends will gather throughout the Southeast in celebration of Thanksgiving. To ensure they all have enough food on the table – not only during holiday seasons but year-round – Steinbach’s Sobeys grocery store is once again taking part in the Fall Food Drive.

On Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18 from 7pm-9pm the club will be facilitating a free “Learn to Curl Clinic,” with lessons given by Manitoba Curling Hall of Famer Barb Mehling. The registration deadline is Friday, October 11 and participants can register online.

This is something the City’s Solid Waste Manager, Eldon Wallman, would like folks to be more aware of – that Steinbach’s Class 1 Regional Landfill & Waste Diversion Facility is equipped to handle more than just residential waste. The facility also accepts other unwanted items for proper recycling or handling. For example, household hazardous waste.
