Vigil for murder victim held in Steinbach, Woodridge and Winnipeg
A steady stream of vehicles moved slowly down Creekside Drive in Steinbach Friday afternoon.
With red ribbons tied to their cars, family and friends of Mackaylah Gerard-Roussin began their vigil in Winnipeg and then traveled to the Deerfield address where earlier this week RCMP were investigating the homicide.
In a Facebook post, a family member said the vigil would continue on from Steinbach to Woodridge and then back to Winnipeg where candles would be lit in front of the Manitoba Legislature at 9 PM.
Sleep Suite stays local with new familiar owners
Smitty’s in Steinbach has been a favourite fixture in the community for decades, welcoming guests into the dining room and lounge and making everyone feel right at home. So it only makes sense that Smitty’s ownership group would choose to expand their offerings by purchasing Sleep Suite Motel.
Kaely Dyck is part of the Smitty’s Steinbach ownership group. She says that like Smitty’s, Sleep Suite has been a trusted local institution for a long time.
“Each member owns a brick of this building.”
Motorists traveling Highway 52 west of Steinbach may have noticed a new addition to established signage at Birchwood Funeral Chapel – a co-op sign. Most are well acquainted with the idea of co-op in terms of gas bars, but what does it mean for a funeral chapel to be a co-op?
Manager Todd Harder explains that Birchwood Funeral Chapel has always been a co-op. However, it never occurred to them to include “co-op” as part of their signage.
Specialty bulk food & giftware shop celebrates re-opening
“We are so excited!”
This from Stony Brook Pantry – the famous specialty bulk food and giftware shop located on Highway 12 North in Steinbach.
On November 14th, 2020, a neighbouring business suffered a massive fire, and Stony Brook Pantry had to close their doors due to severe smoke damage. Throughout the following months, the front of the store has seen a major facelift.
The ownership and staff say that it feels like it's been a long ordeal, but they’re excited about their new look.
“We want to celebrate with all our wonderful customers!”
Grab a fork and follow the Trail
Leave your hiking boots behind- you won’t need them on this trail!

Inaugural Peace Trek to showcase the new Manitoba Peace Trail
It’s a journey through history – an exercise of body, mind and spirit.
That’s how Gary Dyck describes the inaugural Peace Trek, which will take walkers, runners and cyclists down the Manitoba Peace Trail while fundraising for both the Mennonite Heritage Village and Eden Foundation.
“It’ll be good for community recreation and well-being,” says Dyck, Executive Director of Mennonite Heritage Village. “The trail has a sort of pilgrimage feel to it.”
HavenGroup volunteers key to bringing community back to residents
A local senior housing and personal care home community is hoping volunteers will soon return to their organization.
David Driedger is the CEO of HavenGroup. He says that while the opening of the newly renovated and expanded Rest Haven facility is very exciting for staff and residents, there is a gaping hole that remains to be filled.
“Over the course of the pandemic, our volunteer base has kind of disappeared,” Driedger notes. “We're now wanting to revisit that and bring back the volunteer community.”
