Lots of potential in the pulse market for 2024

The pulse market has been relatively strong compared to most other crops.

That was the message Jonathan Driedger with Leftfield Commodity Research delivered to pulse growers this week during the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Regional Meeting in Swift Current.

Driedger told the group online and in person that while the pulse market has been doing well,  he's not sure just how much upside is left for old crop prices.

He points out that one of the challenges for buyers right now is being able to make commitments that they don't know, they can source.

Do it Anyway: Tasha Cobbs Leonard shares her challenges in debut book

Grammy award-winning artist Tasha Cobbs Leonard is getting set to release a book. 

Through the years, the iconic gospel singer has experienced numerous challenges, including infertility, weight challenges, grief and debilitating depression.

"Ten years ago, my family and I, and several artists, travelled back home from Nashville, Tennessee, having celebrated the Stella Awards, gospel's biggest night," said Cobbs Leonard. "As we were travelling, I got a phone call. I found out that my father had suffered a heart attack and had transitioned to be with the Lord."

Michigan University football team sees 70 players baptized

During the March for Life in Washington, D.C. last week, head coach Jim Harbaugh shared the exciting news that 70 of his players chose to be baptized last year. 

"There's a spiritual mission to our team and I'm inspired by them," says Harbaugh during an interview with Jon Root at the march. "The young players on our team are incredible examples."

There are just over 100 players on the roster of the University of Michigan football team, the Wolverines. That means over half the players were inspired to take this step of faith last year.

Ag Outlook Market Analyst delivers a gobal economic and crop outlook

A lot is happening globally that has a direct impact on our agriculture markets from the Russia-Ukraine war to the war in the Middle East.

Brad Magnusson with Magnusson Consulting Group was one of the keynote speakers for this week's Ag Outlook 2024 event.

In giving the global economic outlook, he noted that the United States has a more service-based economy and has done better than Canada.

"It's stronger in GDP growth and employment, while we are heavily based in commodities meaning we'll struggle more."

Federal use of the Emergencies Act was unreasonable, judge rules

A judge has ruled it was unreasonable for the Liberal government to use the Emergencies Act to quell "Freedom Convoy" protests in the national capital and at key border points two years ago.

In a decision released Tuesday, Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley said invocation of the act led to the infringement of constitutional rights. 

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association and several other groups and individuals had argued in court that Ottawa ushered in the emergency measures without sound statutory grounds.

City signs naming rights agreement with CDN Controls Ltd. for Design Works Centre south arena

The City of Grande Prairie and CDN Controls Ltd. have signed a one-year naming rights agreement for the south arena at the Design Works Centre. The arena has been renamed to the CDN Controls South Arena.

“Council is excited to add CDN Controls as a partner, contributing to enhanced facilities, programs and well-being in our community through naming rights,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “The City looks forward to offering excellent access to health, wellness and recreation activities with the support of our valuable community partners.”

Mary Robinson appointed to the Senate

The past President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) has been appointed to the Senate.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing Monday that Mary Robinson has been appointed as an independent senator for Prince Edward Island. 

"Ms. Robinson’s experience in agriculture and business will bring an important perspective to the Senate, where she will be a strong voice for Atlantic Canada. I look forward to working with her to make life better for Canadians from coast to coast to coast."
