Cool Aid Society announces closure of the "Big Red Barn" Hillside location

On Wednesday, the Cool Aid Society in Grande Prairie announced the impending closure of their Hillside facility, also known as the "Big Red Barn" on 92 street.

The organization has been part of the community since the 1970's and started its journey in the North Community of Hillside, before expanding to Patterson.

Their programs have had an impact on the lives of countless young individuals in the Grande Prairie area.

In a recent Facebook post, the organization stated financial challenges as one of the main reasons behind the facility closure.

The Chosen season four comes to Grande Prairie this February

The Chosen Season four will be hitting Grande Prairie this February.

For the first time, all episodes of the show will debut exclusively in theatres.  

The theatrical rollout of Season 4 will begin with a two-week run of Episodes 1-3 on February 1, 2024.  

This will be followed by Episodes 4-6, which will hit theatres on February 15.  

Episodes 7-8 will begin February 29 in the U.S. and Canada. 

The Grande Prairie Cineplex will be showing The Chosen: Feb 1-4 (episodes 1-3) – 6pm nightly.

 

Grande Prairie RCMP traffic stop leads to firearms seizure

On Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2023, Grande Prairie RCMP were conducting pro-active patrols in the Morgan Meadows area when a vehicle was observed driving at a high rate of speed. Police pulled the vehicle over and, while conducting their investigation, found the driver and passenger in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun, pepper spray and bear spray.

Further investigation led police to obtain and execute a search warrant for a residence in Grande Prairie, associated to the passenger. As a result of the search warrant, the following items were seized:

Grande Prairie heavy police presence UPDATE

Grande Prairie RCMP would like to inform the public that charges have been laid with regards to an incident that occured in the city just before Christmas. 

On Dec. 20, at approximately 11 a.m., Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a domestic dispute in progress in a northwest community of Grande Prairie. A 42-year-old man held a woman in her residence at gun point. The man had previously assaulted the woman causing injury. The man had also discharged his firearm inside the residence.

Alberta RCMP remind drivers to use caution when hitting the roadways this weekend. With increased snow fall across the province and temperatures dropping, the roadways will be affected.

Winter driving can be a white-knuckle ride. Snow, ice and long, dark nights all pose challenges to those behind the wheel. Whether you operate a car, truck or snowmobile, winter driving requires special attention.

Be prepared and use caution when snow covers the roads. RCMP remind motorists to check Alberta 511 before travelling for roadway updates.

Cory Asbury puts on special performance at Rutherford County Correctional Work Center

Singer and songwriter, Cory Asbury performed for some special people this summer.

He was invited to put on a show at the Rutherford County Correctional Work Center in Tennessee.

The goal of the Correctional Work Center is to provide inmates with the opportunity to re-enter society with the skills necessary to lead a law-abiding, productive life and to be better prepared to transition back into the community without sacrificing public safety.

Viterra puts forward a new Final Offer to avoid a strike


Viterra has put forward a new Final Offer to the bargaining committee of the Grain and General Services Union.

The offer came in last night following extensive negotiations.

The two sides spent the last two days meeting with a federal mediator.

Viterra's first Final Offer was rejected by GSU members in November (2023).

The elected officers for GSU Locals 1 and 2 are currently reviewing the offer.

The GSU served its 72-hour strike notice on Tuesday and would be in a position to walk out this afternoon.

Forty years after being convicted, two New Brunswick men exonerated in 1983 killing

Two New Brunswick men who were acquitted Thursday of a 1983 murder for which they served lengthy prison sentences said they were worried they wouldn't live to see their names cleared.

Robert Mailman, 76, and Walter Gillespie, 81, were convicted in 1984 of second-degree murder and received life sentences in the killing of George Gilman Leeman in Saint John, N.B. An appeal was dismissed in 1988.
