City urges residents to stay off frozen storm ponds for safety

The City of Grande Prairie is urging residents to prioritize safety by refraining from skating on storm ponds. Storm ponds pose significant safety risks, and engaging in recreational activities on them is strongly discouraged. The City emphasizes the following reasons for avoiding storm pond skating:

Thin Ice - Storm ponds are not designed or maintained for recreational activities like skating. The ice on storm ponds may be thin and inconsistent, posing a risk of falling through the ice.

As mail delivery ramps up for the holiday season, ensure it’s a December to remember for all the right reasons. Mail theft is often a crime of opportunity and happens most in the month of December. With more and more consumers shopping online and having presents delivered, there is an increase in mail delivery, making it easier for thieves to snag your presents!

Two men arrested in Fairview for multiple charges

On Dec. 10, 2023, Fairview RCMP responded to a report of suspicious activity at a rural business in Clear Hills County. RCMP were advised cameras on the property showed two individuals on site carrying jerry cans and hoses. Fairview RCMP responded to the complaint and located two individuals who attempt to flea from police but were unsuccessful and subsequently arrested.

2023 Prairie Potato Production Report


Statistics Canada has released its Potato Production Report for 2023.

Manitoba producers seeded 81,000 acres of potatoes and harvested 80,000 acres for an average yield of 372 hundredweight per harvested acre.

In Saskatchewan, producers seeded 7300 acres with 7200 acres harvested for an average yield of 247 hundredweight per harvested acre.
 
Alberta growers seeded 80,100 acres and harvested 76,440 with an average yield of 419 hundredweight per harvested acre.

Seniors over 87 can apply to join federal dental plan starting next week

The federal government unveiled some details Monday of a long-awaited plan to help uninsured Canadians afford dental care — a rollout industry professionals say they'll be watching closely for its impact on staff shortages and private coverage.

Seniors over the age of 87 will be the first cohort invited to apply to join the federally subsidized dental plan as Ottawa gradually enrols eligible participants over the course of the coming 12 months. 

Ottawa urging Provinces to help fight food inflation

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Francois-Philippe Champagne the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry met with their provincial and territorial counterparts on Monday.

The focus of the meeting was to talk about stabilizing food prices across the country.

The pair stressed the need for greater cooperation between Ottawa and the provinces to fight food inflation. 

GP Salvation Army continues to raise funds for those in need

The Grande Prairie Salvation army kettle campaign continues to raise funds this Christmas season.

The current total so far is $328,720 toward its $650,000 goal.
