Manitoba teachers to see 'substantial wage increase' in historic deal
Manitoba teachers are getting a pay raise.
Teachers have ratified the first-ever provincial collective agreement. In a press release, The Manitoba Teacher's Society (MTS) states that nearly 70 per cent of eligible voters cast their ballots, with 95 per cent voting 'yes' to the deal. The deal covers public school teachers in the 37 Anglophone school divisions.

Winnipegger Skylar Park is bringing home a bronze medal from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Park overcame Lebanon's Laetitia Aoun 2-0 to win Canada's first taekwondo medal since Karine Sergerie won silver at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Park defeated Dominika Hronova of Czechia 2-0 in her first match of the day in the round of 16. She then lost to South Korea's Kim Yujin, but because Kim defeated China's Luo Zongshi and advanced to the finals, Park had another opportunity to get into the medal rounds.
West Nile numbers prompt province-mandated fogging program
A rise in the number Culex tarsalis mosquitoes has led the province to issue a fogging order for Winnipeg.
Several areas have seen high numbers of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes increasing the risk of West Nile Virus transmission.
Starting tomorrow at 9:30 p.m., the city will begin a targeted fogging program.
Due to the provincial order, buffer zones will not be in effect within city limits.
Subject to weather conditions, the program will target the following Insect Management Areas:
Manitoba Hydro worker killed on the job
A Manitoba Hydro employee has died while working in the Interlake region.
The worker, whose identity remains undisclosed, was involved in tasks related to a power outage when the fatal incident occurred on Thursday morning, the crown corporation says in a news release.
Manitoba Hydro President and CEO Allan Danroth expressed the company's grief and commitment to safety, stating, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the individual’s loved ones, friends, and coworkers. We are devastated to lose a member of our Manitoba Hydro family.”

Dairy Queen and the Children's Hospital Foundation are coming together to help sick kids across Manitoba with Miracle Treat Day on August 8, 2024.
Net proceeds from every Blizzard Treat purchased at participating DQ stores in Manitoba will be donated to the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, one of 12 Children’s Miracle Network hospital foundations across Canada.

The City of Winnipeg's latest Leisure Guide is now available.
The new leisure guide features various activities for Winnipeggers through fall and winter.
Registration for all fall and winter activities, except winter swimming and skating, will begin Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 8 a.m. for Winnipeg residents, and Thursday, Aug. 22 for non-residents.
Reininger spectacular in shutout of Saltdogs
Zac Reininger pitched a shutout as the Winnipeg Goldeyes (43-34) defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 1-0 at Haymarket Park Wednesday evening. Combined with Sioux Falls’ loss to Lake Country, the win pulled the Goldeyes to within a half-game of the West Division lead.

Sea Bears' Hildebrandt named CEBL Developmental Player of the Year for second straight season
The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that Simon Hildebrandt has been named the league’s Developmental Player of the Year for a second consecutive season. In his second CEBL campaign this year, the 6-9 University of Manitoba product averaged 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as one of only two collegiate players to appear in all 20 of his team’s regular-season contests.
Wildlife Haven in desperate need of volunteers
Wildlife Haven is in desperate need of volunteers.
Amy Wilkie, Education Program Manager, says they currently have around 140 volunteers who help in various aspects of the organization's operations.
“We wouldn't be able to run as an organization without volunteers, they're just integral to how we are able to operate. And we're appreciative of all of the hours that they donate to us.”
Man dead following hit and run on Main Street
Winnipeg police are investigating after a man was found suffering from serious injuries early Thursday morning
Officers responded to Queen Elizabeth Way and Mayfair Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. where they located the badly injured man.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition where he later died of his injuries.
Winnipeg police say a preliminary investigation indicates the man was walking across Queen Elizabeth Way when he fell. As he was attempting to get back up, he was struck by a southbound vehicle.
