ECS to host 5A girls regional basketball tournament this weekend
Starting tomorrow, Estevan Comprehensive School will be the site of high-stakes basketball action as it hosts the 5A Girls Rural Regional Basketball Tournament.
Ten teams from across Saskatchewan will compete for just two spots at HOOPLA, the provincial championship set for March 22 and 23 in Saskatoon. Teams competing in Estevan include North Battleford Comprehensive, Warman, Yorkton Regional, Prince Albert Carlton, Prince Albert St. Mary, Lloydminster, Weyburn, Swift Current, Moose Jaw Peacock, and the host team, Estevan.
Chinese tariffs on canola oil, meal would be disastrous for Sask.: Moe
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says workers at canola crushing plants in his province would be out of jobs should China move ahead with planned retaliatory tariffs on canola oil and meal.
Moe says Mark Carney must immediately engage with China to prevent the levies from being imposed next week.
Carney is set to be sworn in as prime minister Friday.
Moe says the tariffs would devastate Saskatchewan's canola crushing industry, potentially causing facilities to close, and says Carney should have conversations with Beijing before a federal election is called.
Mom says Canadian woman in 'inhumane' U.S. detention, Global Affairs can't intervene
Global Affairs says it can't intervene on behalf of a Canadian being held in an Arizona immigration detention centre, where the woman's mother has described conditions as "inhumane and deeply concerning."
Alexis Eagles said her daughter, Vancouver businesswoman and former actress Jasmine Mooney, is being detained at the San Luis Regional Detention Center with about 30 people in the same cell.
NDP presents four-point plan to build Canada at SARM convention
Provincial politicians stood up during the SARM convention yesterday to give their addresses on some of the recent concerns rural areas had felt. That began with Premier Scott Moe, but Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck soon followed up with her own ideas.
She brought forward her calls for a nationwide plan to build Canada’s future with more rail lines, pipelines and power lines. Also in transportation, she wants to see the TransCanada Highway twinned from coast-to-coast.
Lost and found: City establishes 90-day rule for unclaimed property
Estevan city council has approved Bylaw No. 2025-2089, known as the Unclaimed Personal Property bylaw, which outlines how lost and unclaimed property in the city’s possession will be handled.
During the recent council meeting, Mayor Tony Sernick read the bylaw, which sets out clear guidelines for the disposition of such property.
“Obviously, we want people to have their personal property first and foremost,” Sernick said. “But [this] just gives us a guideline and rules to go by.”
EPS chase down disturbances and scams, with information session planned this month
The Estevan Police Service has been busy over the week with a few calls to start things off and a sam info event bring planned out.
On March 10, they received a request to do a wellbeing check on an Estevan resident, and they found that the individual was fine.
Police received a report of a suspicious male in the city core area. When attending the area, members were unable to locate the individual, who is believed to be known by police. Police noted that nothing criminal appeared to have occurred related to the report.
Mark Carney to be sworn in as Canada's 24th prime minister Friday
Mark Carney will be sworn in as Canada's 24th prime minister at a ceremony at Rideau Hall Friday after the formal resignation of Justin Trudeau.
Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, who will preside over the event, announced late Wednesday the swearing-in ceremony for Carney and his new cabinet will take place at 11 a.m. ET in the Rideau Hall ballroom.
Carney, who was selected as Liberal leader Sunday in a landslide vote, has promised a "seamless" and "quick" transition.

Estevan Toastmasters Club continues to grow and support individuals in our community. They have an Open House coming up Tuesday, April 1st at 7pm at the Southeast Tech-Hub.
