Southeast community to see boost from provincial-federal infrastructure program

A southeast community is seeing some support from the provincial and federal government as applications have opened as part of the Canadian Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF). Those are due by May 20, with funds going to construction projects in a number of communities.

While many of the locations include cities like Regina and Saskatoon, the small southeast community of Moosomin was added to the list.

C.R.I.T. conference brings critical mineral experts to Estevan

Yesterday, Southeast TechHub (SETH) hosted the C.R.I.T. Minerals – Critical Resources & Innovative Technologies conference in Estevan, bringing together industry experts, researchers, investors, and policymakers to explore innovations in critical minerals and sustainable resource development. Billed as a “mini” version of the ICE (Innovation, Collaboration and Energy) Conference, the event drew participants from across North America and helped build momentum for emerging energy sectors and strategic collaboration.

We're down to the last few days of voting for the Best of Estevan Awards 2025, and the competition is fierce in most categories. Out of hundreds of submissions that were sent in to DiscoverEstevan.com, we had to choose the Top 3 submitted names for each award. 

All submissions in each category are worthy of the award they were nominated. Whether it's a business, person, or charity, all of the names submitted represent the best that Estevan has to offer. To celebrate the last few days of voting, we wanted to share the names that were submitted during the Nominations period. 

Estevan food court moving ahead with national chain conversations

The community has seen work on the Estevan Market Mall progress over the past few years, with some recent steps taken to open up a new food court.

After a 50th anniversary event back in November, they first laid out the beginnings of the food court. Visitors can now check out the area, including the new washrooms installed.

Vendors have yet to open up for the area, with Martin Blair, Managing Director of First Aberdeen Properties, talking about some of the wider work that's gone into the mall.

Canadian Wild Pig Summit Returns for Second Year

The second annual Canadian Wild Pig Summit is set to take place on April 29th. This virtual event will feature a morning of presentations focusing on wild pig monitoring programs and recommendations from Indigenous communities regarding the Canadian Invasive Wild Pig Strategy.

Organized by Manitoba Pork, Squeal on Pigs Manitoba, and Animal Health Canada, the summit aims to address the growing wild pig population in Western Canada. These animals pose significant dangers to people and livestock and cause considerable environmental damage.

Western Dairy Expo Kicks Off in Saskatoon

The Western Dairy Expo begins today in Saskatoon, bringing together dairy producers from across Western Canada to showcase the best of the best in the dairy industry. 

The event runs through Saturday at Prairieland and is also being live-streamed.

The Expo starts at 2 pm today with junior events, featuring showmanship and a junior show where kids under 21 will present heifers.

Donald Bolen, the archbishop of Regina, is travelling to Vatican City for Saturday’s funeral of Pope Francis – a journey, he says, is to honour a pontiff who mirrored his vision and his compassion.

"When (Francis) put out a book called 'The Name of God is Mercy,' I smiled. Because my episcopal motto is 'mercy within mercy within mercy' — very much that same understanding,” Bolen said in an interview.

"I had enormous respect for Pope Francis through his pontificate.”

Manitoba’s wild pigs not headed for population boom, expert says

Signs say Manitoba’s wild pigs aren’t headed for a population boom, says Wayne Lees, co-ordinator for Squeal on Pigs Manitoba.

“We’ve always heard that, you know, these pigs are going to explode in population,” Lees said. “Our field experience didn’t really support that, so we wanted to start challenging some of these assumptions.”

WHY IT MATTERS: A study from Squeal on Pigs Manitoba appears to show a slower population growth of wild pigs in Manitoba than originally expected.

It's Christmas for many hockey fans these days. The Stanley Cup Finals are well underway, with office pools and brackets ready to go. Post-season trades are being considered, so fans are locked in to see where their favourite player will land or how their team will stack up in the fall. For us in southeast Saskatchewan, we're glued to the SJHL Finals series between the Weyburn Red Wings and the Melfort Mustangs. Right now, they're tied at 1-1 after a split weekend in Melfort.
