Manitoba Pork celebrated its 60th anniversary during its annual meeting and industry banquet Thursday in Winnipeg. Producers, processors and various stakeholders gathered at the Fairmont for the day full of meetings which was capped by an evening gala. There are currently 188 registered producers in the province, representing 608 farms and 22,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
Poilievre pledges to use the notwithstanding clause, Carney talks defence procurement
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is promising that a government led by him would use the notwithstanding clause to override Charter rights to implement his tough-on-crime agenda — something no prime minister has ever done.
Poilievre was campaigning in Montreal on Monday, where he announced he would pass a law to allow judges to impose consecutive life sentences in cases of multiple murders. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2022 that imposing consecutive life sentences violates an offender's Charter rights.
Three local teams in Sask Cup volleyball action
A strong weekend for the 18UW Elite Sundogs Volleyball Club who won five in a row at Sask Cup #3 before falling in the semifinal.
They beat Summit, Esterhazy, the Grizz, the Blitz Blackout and the Cougars all in straight sets.
The Sundogs then fell 21-25, 25-20, 13-15 to the Wolfpack in the semifinal.
Swift Current then dropped the third-place match to Stealth 25-21, 25-20.
The Sundogs Selects went 2-5 at the event.
The 17UW Sundogs Elite also finished fourth at their own Sask Cup #3.
Irwin school gets classroom complexity funding
O.M. Irwin School in Swift Current is the first southwest Saskatchewan school to get in on the recent provincial funding for classroom complexity.

Sundogs compete at 13UW volleyball provincials
Two Swift Current Sundogs Club volleyball teams appeared at the Saskatchewan 13 and under women's volleyball provincials over the weekend.
The 13UW Sundogs Elite went 3-4 at the event, ending with a win over QCVC Purple in a consolation bracket match 25-12, 25-27 and 17-15.
They won three of their last four to close out their provincial run.
The Sundogs Select went 1-6 but also ended on a winning note in the consolation bracket with a 25-20 and 25-13 win over BVC Crush.
15UW Elite Sundogs win Golden Ticket tournament
A golden ticket for the Sundogs.
The Fountain Tire 15 Under Women's Elite Sundogs club volleyball team won the 16UW Golden Ticket Tournament over the weekend.
They beat Nipawin Fusion 25-18, 25-11 in the quarterfinal, took down Golden Ticket out of Regina 25-15, 25-14 in the semifinal, and topped Thunder Creek Volleyball Club 25-20, 25-22 in the final.
They are now off until provincials April 26-28 in Saskatoon.
Surge go 3-1 in first tournament
The Swift Current Surge U15 Boys Green basketball team went 3-1 at their first tournament of the season.
They competed at the Battle in the Bridge City Tournament in Saskatoon over the weekend.
The Surge started with a tightly contested 83-77 loss to the Saskatoon Slam Magic before rattling off three straight wins.
Swift Current beat the PA Lakers 70-62, YXE Elite White 97-37, and YXE Elite U14 71-47.
Their next tournament action is the Prairie Premier Classic on May 16 in Moose Jaw.
Police investigating vandalism at inclusive park
Police are looking into reports of vandalism at the Plewis Automotive Group Inclusive Park in Swift Current.
Swift Current RCMP say they're investigating a report of mischief to property at the inclusive park.
The RCMP added that their investigation is in the early stages and that they have no further information to share at the moment.
Equipment at the park was broken recently, and pictures surfaced on social media this weekend.
It first opened on Swift Current's south side in September 2023.
Skate and Paint covers the Innovation Plex rink in community colours
The Innovation Plex hockey rink was a whole lot more colourful than usual last Tuesday evening.
Over 190 members of the community came out to paint the ice surface during "Skate and Paint', hosted by the City of Swift Current and sponsored by Service Master. The first half of the event was a free open skate, while the second half was a free invitation for families and individuals to come out and paint the ice in any way they pleased.
