Swift Current product tackles LPS charity run

A locally raised athlete ran in a half-marathon over the weekend, with proceeds from the run going to Special Olympics Alberta to support sporting programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The Lethbridge Police Charity Road Run took place this past Saturday, with the starting line at the Sandman Signature Hotel and the finish at the Police Gun Range. 

Canadian obstetricians say Tylenol is still safe to take in pregnancy after position review

A group representing Canada's obstetricians and gynecologists says it has reviewed evidence on Tylenol use during pregnancy and maintains that the painkiller is safe. 

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada said on Monday that it has revisited its position in light of reports questioning whether there is a link between mothers taking acetaminophen while pregnant and autism in children. 

Liberals will table the federal budget on Nov. 4, Champagne says

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne says the government will table the federal budget on Nov. 4.

The long-awaited spending plan will be the federal Liberals' first under Prime Minister Mark Carney and comes as Ottawa's budget watchdog says he's worried about a lack of fiscal prudence.

It also will be Champagne's first budget as finance minister. He announced the date during question period Tuesday.

He said the plan will offer a "generational investment" in Canada's future.

Ardens learning valuable early lessons

The Swift Current Comp Ardens soccer team did a lot of learning through three victories at their home tournament.

"I think we were pretty excited about our performance over three games," said Ardens Head Coach Steven Mah. "It was a grueling weekend and we're a little short on bodies and ran into some injuries issues. The girls over there really stepped up. Some players had to play some different roles, some bigger roles, but I think overall it went pretty well."

Mah saw it as a good opportunity for what is largely a younger group to face some adversity.

French hand cyclist trains for 24-hour race on Cadillac roads

Residents in Cadillac and the surrounding communities may have seen a man racing up and down the roads on his handcycle the last few months.

"The first year I was the first time I was here last year the people was wondering who is this guy on this train bicycle with the three wheels?" said Fred Lacroix. "We know he has a wheelchair, he's disabled, who is this one? And today everybody knows me here, it's really fantastic."

The native of French Alps has been camping in Cadillac each of the last two summers training for a 24-hour race in California this November.

'Tanya deserves justice': Family of Weyburn shooting victim pleads

The family of the woman killed in a shooting on Highway 39 last week is pleading for the person responsible to come forward, saying the loss has left a giant gaping hole in their lives. 

The emotional appeal was released Tuesday by the RCMP on behalf of the family of Tanya Myers, who was identified as the 44-year-old victim who tragically died on September 12. The statement came during a media briefing where investigators also lauded what they called the public's fantastic response to calls for information.

Testimony in human trafficking trial focuses on foreign worker program and alleged victim’s living situation

Testimony in an ongoing human trafficking trial in Rosetown has centred on the use of Canada’s temporary foreign worker program and the experiences of a woman at the heart of the case.

Two men, identified in court as Haider and Masum, are charged with human trafficking, while Masum also faces an additional charge of sexual assault.

Much of the testimony last week focused on the hiring process for temporary foreign workers, work permits and Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) at a restaurant in rural Saskatchewan between 2017 and 2023.

The Big One returns to Swift Current

The Big One is set to take over the Living Sky Casino parking lot.

The parking will be open to those entering the show at 3 p.m on Tuesday. Spectator parking will be allocated in the east parking lot, while the entire west side of the parking lot is reserved for the show. The City of Swift Current has even approved the use of Battleford Trail for parking if the Rogue Cruisers require the space. 

Power outages push through southwest Sask.

SaskPower has advised southwest residents of several planned power outages scheduled for Tuesday, September 16.

The first power outage began at 10:00 a.m. in Pennant and rural areas northwest of Pennant, and will affect 37 customers while work is completed to power poles in the area.

Joel Cherry, spokesperson for SaskPower, shared that the second outage will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Hallonwuist and rural areas east of McMahon.

"The Hallonquist outage is for 70 customers," he said. "There they're splicing a new line and salvaging a pole."

Freeland resigns from cabinet as she takes on new role as special envoy to Ukraine

Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Chrystia Freeland as Canada's new special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

While Freeland announced her resignation as transport minister on social media today, she will remain in the House of Commons as an MP until the next election.

She left today's regular cabinet meeting smiling and talking with Carney, but neither answered questions from reporters stationed outside the room.
