Write Out Loud brings Bouvier to southwest Sask.
An experienced Indigenous poet will be showcased at the Lyric Theatre's next session of Write Out Loud coming up next week.
Saskatoon-based writer Rita Bouvier will share excerpts from some of her work and give folks a sneak peek into her process at the event on Wednesday, April 16.
The Metis writer and long-time educator noted that despite working with writing groups in the past, she's never participated in the Lyric Theatre's Write Out Loud.
Train causes grass fire by Morse
A quick response by the RM of Morse Fire Department on Tuesday to a grass fire ensured the inferno left the town untouched.
The fire call came into the volunteer department around 3:45 p.m. as a blaze just west of the community in grassland was spotted.
Trevor Moss, the RM of Morse's fire chief, said the fire was started by a train passing through the area on the tracks.
"We're not sure which train started it," he said. "A lot of different ignition sources, so it kind of spread out.
New initiative hopes to boost consumer confidence for Canadian meat products
Canadian producers will have a new way to make sure they can say their product is upholding sustainability, as the Canadian Meat Council (CMC) is unveiling their participation in the Protein PACT Sustainability Framework. The initiative will look to uphold sustainability standards across the country for Canada's beef producers.
Lauren Martin, the Senior Director of Public Affairs and Corporate Council for CMC, says that it was made in cooperation with our southern neighbours.
RMs working on website template
Rural Municipalities across Saskatchewan could soon be sharing a website format.
"We were invited to be part of a pilot project with SARM in developing a website format that would be available to all of the RMs," said RM of Swift Current Reeve Ramona Dyck. "It would be a structure that would help us to have more of a unified look."
The RMs are working with a company called OurSask to facilitate a pilot project.
Dyck feels a template like that would provide consistent, fluid, interactive, and user-friendly access to information.
Mayo commits to Merrimack in NCAA
Graduating Swift Current Broncos defenceman Hunter Mayo is off to Merrimack College in the NCAA.
Mayo's commitment means all three overage Broncos players earned NCAA opportunities for next season in the first season WHL players are eligible to play down south.
"They've earned (the opportunities), they deserve them," said Broncos General Manager Chad Leslie. "I'm really happy for our guys that are graduating."
Mayo had 27 points in 27 games for swift Current after coming over from Red Deer at the trade deadline.
14U Sundogs win home tournament
The Plewis Automotive Group 14 and Under Male Elite Sundogs Volleyball Club team defended home turf.
They won their home tournament in Swift Current over the weekend.
The Sundogs beat GTVC out of Moose Jaw 25-20 and 25-14 in the gold medal game.
Swift Current honours eight fallen soldiers from Battle of Vimy Ridge
For many, the Battle of Vimy Ridge, spanning four days, symbolizes Canada's emerging national identity and the sacrifices made by its soldiers, including eight from Swift Current.
The battle, which took place April 9 to 12, 1917, about 175 kilometres from Paris, France, was a crucial victory for Canadian forces during World War I over the German army.
John Griffin, a local resident with deep personal ties to the war and the Royal Canadian Legion, said Vimy Ridge's legacy and has a large connection to Swift Current.

The Gull Lake Dodgeball Tournament will be hosted at the Gull Lake & District Rink Complex on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26.

Leaders take their campaigns to Western Canada as federal election nears midpoint
The leaders of the top three federal parties were campaigning Tuesday in Western Canada, where Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to crack down on offshore tax loopholes by appointing a tax task force.
The Conservatives said the task force would be asked to make the rules simpler and more fair and would ensure large companies can't "stash their money in offshore tax havens."
