Ramage returns for sixth term on Chinook School Board

Incumbent trustee for the Chinook School Board, Tim Ramage, was re-elected to serve his sixth term on the school board. 

Ramage has sat on the Chinook School Board since its inception and is looking forward to continuing to do what he enjoys and ensuring a better learning experience for students. 

"I'm just excited to be back on the school board and represent our kids and youth, I want to do the best I can to make sure they have a great learning environment," he said. 

Caswell captures seat on Chinook School Board

Swift Current's Ron Caswell secured one of three seats on the Chinook School Board, with the other two spots going to incumbent trustees.

The former power engineer is hoping to focus on addressing issues with class complexity and give the parents of students a voice.

"I'm quite happy with the result, I'm very much looking forward to hitting the ground running and seeing what we can accomplish in the next four years," the newly elected trustee said. 

Gull Lake welcomes new mayor and council

Nasser Zanidean is the new mayor of Gull Lake.

He beat Dennis Kirk 212 to 144 votes in yesterday's municipal election.

A four-term councillor, Zanidean will now move to the big chair.

He is joined on council by Terry Stevenson, Tyson Migneault, Karen Turton, Neal Boutin, Brandon Wessner and Steve Haithwaite. 

359 people voted in the election and Stevenson led the pack with 304 votes. 

Congratulations to Patsy and Jennifer our next Ticket Takeoff winners

It was a winning Wednesday yesterday for Patsy and Jennifer our latest Ticket Takeoff winners. 

Patsy was our lucky winner of tickets to see children's entertainer Blippi and his "Join the band tour" coming to Co-op Place on November 17th and Jennifer won tickets to see Barka by Girovago coming to the Esplanade on November 20th. 

Along with tickets to the shows both Patsy and Jennifer also received a one-night stay at the Medicine Hat Lodge. 

A win and a loss on day two of Country Cash Corral

Energy experts think Donald Trump will make tariff exemptions for Canadian oil

President-elect Donald Trump's promise to slap an across-the-board tariff of at least 10 per cent on all imports including from Canada is unlikely to apply to Canadian oil, energy experts are predicting.

The threat of the tariff is causing a lot of concern north of the border, where the Canadian Chamber of Commerce said such a tariff could take a $30-billion bite out of the Canadian economy.

Class-action alleges abuse, cultural devastation at Canadian Indigenous group homes

A proposed class-action lawsuit against the Canadian government says Indigenous people removed from their communities and placed in group homes beginning in the 1950s suffered physical, sexual and psychological abuse that "was commonplace, condoned and, arguably, encouraged."

The Federal Court lawsuit filed this month in Vancouver says Indigenous children across the country were forcibly removed from their homes and taken "to live with strangers — sometimes hundreds of kilometres from their families and Indigenous communities."

One new face joins veterans on Chinook School Division Board

Swift Current is sending two experienced trustees and a new face to the Chinook School Division Board.

Tim Ramage and Dianne Hahn return to the board with 1252 votes and 1181 votes respectively.

Ramage has been on the school board since 2005, while this is Hahn's third term. 

Ron Caswell edged out incumbent Ken Duncalfe 1151 to 1113.

William Reil finished 5th with 407 votes.
