Thunderstorm activity should be mostly east of Swift Current during Frontier Days

Promising news from Environment and Climate Change Canada as we continue through Frontier Days in Swift Current.

"I guess the good news for you is (thunderstorm systems) should be continuing east with time," said meteorologist Crawford Luke. "It looks like today is going to be more of an issue for further east of you kind of like Moose Jaw and Regina especially."

Police arrest Donny Gurney in Swift Current

After escaping police last week, Donny Gurney is in custody.

Swift Current Rural RCMP say they arrested Gurney earlier today in Swift Current.

They also recovered the stolen 2005 F350 truck they found him in on June 19th.

The incident started with a report of a stolen 2005 F350 in the RM of Swift Current at 8:00 AM last Thursday.

Police said their investigation determined that someone broke into two buildings on a rural property and stole the truck.

Regina does Wolverines a favour

Sometimes you need a little help from a rival.

The Regina Chaos did the Swift Current Wolverines in junior Prairie Gold Lacrosse League action last night.

Avery Sewell, Caleb Singer-Scherle, and Kenton Appel each had hat tricks in a 14-3 Regina win over the Saskatoon Swat.

Saskatoon is 3 points behind Swift Current for the third and final playoff spot in the league.

The Wolverines have already played their final regular season games, while Saskatoon still has two more games in hand.

Mistelbacher commits to Maine

Former Swift Current Bronco Luke Mistelbacher has determined his next destination.

He committed to the University of Maine for the 2026-27 hockey season.

Swift Current traded Mistelbacher to Brandon before the WHL Draft.

The Steinbach native had 42 goals and 51 assists in 67 games for the Broncos last season.

Swift Current dealt Mistelbacher and Grayson Burzynski to the Brandon Wheat Kings for five draft picks and forward Alex Letourneau.

He joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent and spent three seasons with Swift Current.

Hail recorded in parts of southwest

Severe weather continues to target the southwest.

Environment and Climate Change Canada received several reports from the region, including Val Marie, of hail on Wednesday afternoon.

"We had some hail reports come in from a line of storms that extended all the way up to the Battlefords and then all the way south to the Montana border, including Swift Current," said Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. "We saw a lot of hail reports in that pea to dime-sized, so 1 centimetre in diameter, nothing too major that we know of."

Texas country singer brings some southern charm to Frontier Days

A renowned Texas-bred artist will be making a pit stop in southwest Saskatchewan for a live show on Friday evening.

Neal McCoy will be in Swift Current to perform with Morgan Kleiber at the Grandstand for the 87th annual Frontier Days, with he show beginning at 8:30 p.m. 

The seasoned singer shared that he was born and raised in northeast Texas, coming from the small town of Jacksonville.

Swift Current Mayor addresses accusations from New Beginnings

Swift Current Mayor Al Bridal has responded to a social media post claiming the City of Swift Current is impeding a local business from opening its doors.

The post on Facebook, made late Tuesday night by New Beginnings, a non-profit thrift store planning to open at 508 Cheadle Street West, stated they would not be accepting donations "due to the City of Swift Current not allowing us to open our doors."

Fire Department saves youth trapped at cutbanks

The Swift Current Fire Department's quick action Wednesday evening ensured a successful rescue mission for a youth stranded at the cutbanks.

Emergency crews were mobilized around 7:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a child trapped at the end of the cutbanks on the south side of Swift Current.

Jim Green, deputy chief of the Swift Current Fire Department, said that upon their arrival, they found a young person on a steep embankment.

Marjorie Anne Spate

It is with great sadness the family of Marjorie (Marj) Anne Spate (Pollock) announce her passing. She passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, surrounded by loved ones, at the Herbert Long Term Care Facility. At Marj’s request, no formal service will be held at this time.
