Incident at the Trans-Canada and Highway 4 overpass

Traffic is being impact by an incident at the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 4 overpass.

Motorists are advised to use caution as a school bus is stopped under the overpass, and a truck pulling a camper trailer is stopped on the on ramp to the Trans-Canada Highway.

RCMP are on site, and are speaking to both vehicles.

Details on this incident haven't been shared at this time.

Tail Light Tuesday launches into September with the SPCA Swift Current

Tail Light Tuesday saw a decent turnout for the start of September.

The kids may be back in school, but the Rogue Cruisers are still taking over the Living Sky Casino parking lot every Tuesday evening, with over 80 vehicles turning up in their most recent show. 

Co-founding member of the Rogue Cruisers, Ron Schultz, was glad to see so many people come down despite how busy back-to-school can be.

International Literacy Week dials in on digital literacy in Swift Current

International Literacy Week is returning to Swift Current and will stretch from September 7 to 13. 

Olivia Brotzell of the Swift Current Library attended the Swift Current city council on Tuesday evening alongside Tekeyla Friday of the Chinook Regional Library to present this year's theme and programming. Both are members of the Southwest Literacy Committee. 

"Literacy is the foundation for so many aspects of our lives," said Brotzell. 

Goaltenders shine in Broncos pre-season win over Regina

One of the most promising scorers in the WHL made their pre-season debut last night, but it was the goaltenders who stole the show.

Berney Weston and Aiden Eskit slowed Maddox Schultz and the Regina Pats in a 2-1 victory for the Swift Current Broncos.

It was a pre-season "rookie game" between the two clubs. 

Weston stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced in his half of the game, while Eskit then turned aside all 28 shots sent his way.

Local man paying off hefty fines after impaired hit and run

A Swift Current man will be paying nearly $2,000 in fines after his sentencing earlier this week on a charge garnered from an aggravated drunk driving incident this past summer, which included a hit and run. 

23-year-old Jasper Gian appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court, where he pleaded guilty to impaired operation of a motor vehicle while over the legal alcohol limit

Could farmers face another tariff?

It looks like India is thinking about implementing an import duty on yellow peas. 

India Pulses and Grains Association is concerned that an increase in yellow pea production in Canada and Russia could result in more imports.

They say ongoing imports have brought down prices, which could discourage Indian farmers from expanding their own pulse production.

The IPGA says in order to raise the price of yellow peas in the domestic market, they are calling on the Indian government to impose a 30 to 40 per cent import duty.

Poilievre calls on Liberals to scrap the temporary foreign worker program

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on the Liberals to scrap the temporary foreign worker program, arguing it has caused an employment crisis among young Canadians.

"The Liberals have to answer why is it that they're shutting our own youth out of jobs and replacing them with low-wage, temporary foreign workers from poor countries who are ultimately being exploited," Poilievre told a news conference Wednesday morning in Mississauga, Ont.

"We want Canadian workers to have Canadian jobs. We want to bring back high wages."

Carney says his ministers are looking for ways to cut spending at cabinet retreat

Prime Minister Mark Carney and his cabinet will meet behind closed doors for a second day in a row today, as the Liberal government prepares for Parliament's return in a little under two weeks.

Cabinet is discussing efforts to spur industrial investment, refocus Ottawa's spending priorities for the coming fall budget and counter U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs.

The federal government is expected in October to table Carney's first budget since taking office.

The graveside service for Mr. Reinhold (Ron) Dittmann will be taking place on Thursday September 11, at 2:00 p.m. at the Gull Lake Cemetery. Following service everyone is invited to the Empire Diner for a coffee in remembrance of Ron.
