Legionnaires split pre-season games

The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires shook of the rust this weekend.

They split two exhibition games in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League.

Former Saskatoon Contact Hudson Postnikoff opened the scoring and added an assist for the Legionnaires in their 3-2 win over the Battlefords on Friday.

Swift Current's Jaxson Squires and former Yorkton Mauler Kyler Bilokreli had the other goals for Swift Current.

Jake Hargraves had two assists for Swift Current, while Tate Leshures made 26 saves to get the win in goal.

Chinook expands education coaching roster

The coaching roster is getting deeper at the Chinook School Division.

"We've had math and literary coaches for a long time," said Angela Hermanson, Deputy Director, Chinook School Division. "Now something that we've brought in this year is an English as a second language coach and student service coaches."

Those coaches can help students become classroom-ready.

Mrs. Debbie Desautels

The memorial service for Mrs. Debbie Desautels of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Patti Sherk officiating.

The interment will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery following the memorial service.

Elections Canada to launch review following issues with special ballots

Elections Canada is launching a probe into problems with special ballots in the last federal election.

"We really have to look at the controls in place to make sure that they are sufficient," and make improvements where possible, Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault told reporters at a press conference on Parliament Hill on Monday.

Plans for the review were outlined on Monday in the agency's report on the 45th general election held on April 28. The report promises a "comprehensive review" that will examine training, control mechanisms and processes."

Liberals, Conservatives talk co-operation but trade jabs as Parliament returns

After talking up the prospect of cross-party collaboration in the House of Commons, Liberal and Conservative MPs wasted little time after Parliament resumed Monday before reverting to partisan attacks over housing and the cost of living.

The tone was set early Monday afternoon, when the first-ever question period exchange between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre began cordially before turning belligerent.

Go Green spouts new efforts in Swift Current parks and pathways

Go Green has sprouted another huge community effort once again in Swift Current. 

Beginning last Friday, the annual green space initiative was launched at Market Square alongside the launch of 50/50 For Change, which is in support of the Southwest Facility Foundation this year. 

Darcy Congdon, director of operations for Stark & Marsh, which heads up the Go Green initiative along with Innovation Federal Credit Union, was thrilled to see 110 people register for Go Green at Market Square. 

Both lanes slowed near Admiral

Highway 13 is experiencing disruptions due to ongoing construction. 

The work stretches from Admiral to Highway 4. Flag persons are working in the area, and motorists are asked to be ready to stop. 

Speeds are being reduced to 60 kilometres per hour in the vicinity, with both lanes affected.

PICTURES: Northern Lights reign over southwest Saskatchewan

Last night, a massive band of the Aurora Borealis stretched as far as Swift Current and other southwest Saskatchewan locals. 

People from all over Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada were treated to an amazing light show of dancing interstellar winds bursting over the atmosphere. This brilliant display was visible to the naked eye from 8 p.m. until deep into the night, long after most retreated to sleep.
