Highlights from the G7 meeting in Kananaskis

Canada is hosting the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has two days of meetings scheduled with world leaders, with discussion topics likely to include trade, the war in Ukraine and conflict in the Middle East.

Here are some highlights from the first day of the summit.

Approximately 7000 Manitobans will be able to return home from Pimicikamak Cree Nation (Cross Lake) and the Incorporated Community of Cross Lake effective today, Monday, June 16.

While conditions are improving, the province is at a high fire danger level today and the potential for new fires due to lightning and human causes continues. Evacuees are thanked for their patience as re-entry plans continue over the coming weeks to return evacuees to their homes safely and as soon as possible.

RCMP have cleared the scene at South Perimeter highway - Winnipeg

The RCMP thanks the media and the public for their assistance.

RCMP members have cleared the scene and traffic is moving as per usual on the Perimeter.

It is unknown right now the exact number of vehicles involved in the collision, but there were no serious injuries in the incident.

 Motorists are being asked to avoid the Perimeter Highway at the Portage Avenue overpass, in the southbound direction.

Rain, cooler temperatures provide relief in Prairie wildfires, more evacuees go home

Rain and cooler temperatures brought relief to fire-ravaged Manitoba and Saskatchewan Monday, allowing fire bans to be reduced and more evacuees to go home.

The weather helped fire crews get an upper hand in parts of northern Manitoba to clear the way for some of the 21,000 or more evacuees to start returning home.

David Monias, chief of Pimicikamak Cree Nation, reposted video of heavy rainfall on social media along with video of small planes leaving Winnipeg with evacuees who were forced out almost three weeks earlier.

Time to increase field scouting activities for insects

Some areas of the prairies have received some rain over the past few days, but the weeks of hot, dry weather have had an impact on crops, hay, and pastureland. 

With the dry conditions across so much of the Prairies, there's been an increased concern about grasshopper infestations.

Dr. Meghan Vankosky, a research scientist in field crop entomology with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, says grasshoppers could be shaping up to be an important story again this year.

Slippery City Slickers Stir Up Trouble in Steinbach: Fights, crashes, and chaos during festival weekend

Steinbach RCMP along with the help of the Manitoba RCMP Traffic saw increased calls for service after Summer in the City weekend.

In total, 35 people were charged for offences ranging from Speeding to Dangerous driving, Impaired operation of a Conveyance, Beak and Enter and Possession of weapon dangerous to public. There were 31 Provincial Offence notices issued.
