An invasive, noxious plant is making its presence known in southeast Saskatchewan, and experts are urging residents to take precautions and act quickly if they spot it on their property. 

Wild parsnip is an aggressive weed known for both its rapid spread and hazardous effects on human skin. It has been spreading rapidly throughout the region, especially along highways and ditches. 

Southwest History: Local man recognized for restoration of heritage site

A local man was recently awarded the prestigious Lieutenant Governor's Heritage Award to recognize the restoration of a historic building, which took more than two decades to transform.

Hildor Braun, owner of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, Hangar #3, located at the Swift Current Airport, was presented the award last Wednesday in Regina.

Local investors and more are being alerted of several unregistered investment groups that may not be legitimate; London Group, Quantum AI, Rapliplen, and Galaxy Trading Analytics.

Quantum AI claims to offer cryptocurrencies and contracts for differences, while Galaxy Trading Analytics claims to offer commodities, cryptocurrencies, and forex.

Rapliplen claims to offer stocks, commodities, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs, and London Group claims to offer ETFs and commodities in the form of precious metals traded as option contracts.

'I know it's not a lot of money, but it's something.' Altona Elks donate $1,000 to local foodbank.

A $1,000 cheque from the Altona Elks will go a long way in helping the Rhineland and Area Foodbank meet demand.

A new permanent Manitoba trade office in Washington, D.C. is being welcomed as a timely move to protect local businesses and strengthen the province’s cross-border relationships.

Stefanie Dunn, executive director of the Portage la Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce, says the decision is a direct response to ongoing concerns about trade, tariffs and competition.

Morris unites to honour students with new multi-sport court

It was an emotional day as family and friends of Eli Jashyn were among the crowd that celebrated the grand opening of the multi-sport court in Morris last week. 
    
Incorporated into the new facility is a bench in memory of Eli, who passed away from cancer in 2022 at the age of 15. He would have graduated high school with his peers this past week.

Strong start for strawberry U-pick season

The owner of Friedensfeld Honey and Berry Farm says it was humbling to see such a great turnout on opening day for U-pick.

The strawberry U-pick season officially got underway on Friday at their farm east of Friedensfeld. Andy Loewen says an opening day of June 27th is a little bit earlier than normal.

"I think sometimes we only open around July 1st," he says. "But it varies within kind of a one-week period."

From rivals to allies: Steinbach and Winkler unite to tackle municipal challenges

Steinbach and Winkler may be hockey rivals, but off the ice, their councils are proving they’re stronger together. 

On Monday, June 23, Steinbach City Council welcomed members of Winkler’s council and administration for a full day of touring, discussion and collaboration. The visit included a close look at new developments, community facilities, and future opportunities for joint advocacy. 

Summer programs return to Portage community schools 

Jennifer Adamson, administrator of student services for the Portage la Prairie School Division, says families can look forward to another season of summer programming at the city’s three community schools: North Memorial, La Vérendrye, and Fort la Reine. 

Adamson says the programs will run once a week from August 12 to August 28, and include morning sessions for caregivers and afternoon sessions by invitation only.
