Alberta Next Panel draws hundreds in Airdrie
Yesterday, the provincial government hosted its Alberta Next Panel in Airdrie.
Hundreds of Airdronians and the surrounding area residents attended the sold-out event, voicing their opinions on the predetermined topics.
The panel had six topics on the agenda, which included:
Innovation Saskatchewan invests $60,000 to boost startup ecosystem
Innovation Saskatchewan is putting $60,000 into Startup TNT to help early-stage companies connect with investors and secure venture capital.
The provincial agency said Monday the funding will support Startup TNT’s programming through spring 2026, including the upcoming Saskatchewan Summit XII and Agri-Food Summit this fall.
'Very scary situation, very upsetting situation' WPS first on scene of fatal Hwy 39 shooting
The Weyburn Police Service were the first to respond to the fatal shooting on Highway 39 on Friday. They arrived at the scene shortly after 8 p.m. alongside EMS after a report of a seriously injured individual in an SUV on the Highway, approximately 3 kilometres northwest of Weyburn.
Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John says their members were able to respond very quickly.
Battlefords RCMP launch night patrols to curb property crime
Battlefords RCMP are stepping up efforts to tackle property crime with the launch of a new night patrol initiative.
The Property Crime Prevention Police Night Patrols will see officers on foot and bicycle, in both uniform and civilian clothes, circulating through the Town of Battleford and the City of North Battleford at random times and dates.
Inspector Ryan How, Battlefords RCMP detachment commander, said the targeted patrols aim to respond faster to incidents while discouraging crime before it occurs.
Storms sticking around as North Dakota system continues to rage nearby
The southeast was forecast to have a bit of dry weather this week, but now Environment and Climate Change Canada's predictions have changed to dump more moisture across the southeast.
The area is just recovering after a massive rain over the weekend, which dumped more than the monthly average in under 48 hours, and with the recent forecast, it's likely to continue dropping over the area.

Aggressive moose encounter sparks warning in Kananaskis
Alberta Parks has issued a wildlife warning for part of the Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit Trail after an aggressive moose was reported.
The advisory took effect Sept. 16 and will remain in place until further notice.
It covers the south side of the trail from Upper Lake Day Use to Point Campground — but not the campground itself — as well as the Hidden Lake area in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
Alberta changing industrial carbon tax program to recognize company investments
The Alberta government is changing its industrial carbon tax program to let companies avoid paying provincial fees based on emissions by investing in their own emissions reduction projects instead.
Premier Danielle Smith says the move, likely to come into effect this fall, would support economic growth while ensuring companies work to lower emissions.
She says the province is also allowing smaller companies that don't meet the emissions threshold to opt out of the carbon pricing system for 2025.
‘Tanya deserves justice’: Family urges answers in Weyburn shooting
The family of the woman killed in a shooting on Highway 39 last week is pleading for the person responsible to come forward, saying the loss has left a giant gaping hole in their lives.
The emotional appeal was released Tuesday by the RCMP on behalf of the family of Tanya Myers, who was identified as the 44-year-old victim who tragically died on September 12. The statement came during a media briefing where investigators also lauded what they called the public's fantastic response to calls for information.
Few crashes in Airdrie, but rail police say complacency fuels collisions
Airdrie RCMP say they have responded to two trespassing calls and two collisions involving trains in the past five years, as Alberta marks Rail Safety Week from Sept. 15 to 21.
Since 2020, local members have also handled other rail-related calls. In a written response, Airdrie RCMP listed: “2 Trespassing, 2 Collisions, 3 Cows on track, 1 broken down train, 3 lights malfunction, 1 hazard on track.”
“No tickets/charges most with people were gone upon our arrival. The majority of our railway calls are not persons,” Airdrie RCMP said in a written response.
Eckville deputy fire chief retires after 13 years of service
A longtime member of the Eckville Fire Department is retiring after 13 years of service.
The department is recognizing Deputy Chief Mike Bender, who is concluding his career of service and dedication to the community.
Bender has been with the department for more than 13 years, serving with professionalism, leadership and a strong commitment to public safety. Over his career, he responded to countless emergencies, mentored firefighters, strengthened the department and earned the respect of colleagues and residents.
