Saskatchewan Premier Moe says hopeful for progress after canola meeting in China

Premier Scott Moe, back in Saskatchewan after a trip to China to try and resolve a trade dispute, said Monday he’s hopeful they can find a solution.

Moe told reporters he and Prime Minister Mark Carney's parliamentary secretary Kody Blois met last week with Chinese officials who oversee an agency responsible for imposing steep tariffs on Canadian canola products. 

They also met with Li Chenggang, the international trade negotiator with China's Ministry of Commerce, and other industry officials. 

NDP calls for Steele's demotion after role in court case

The Saskatchewan NDP has called for Premier Scott Moe to remove Cypress Hills MLA Doug Steele as Government Caucus Chair after testimony on his role in a local human trafficking trial.

"When Doug Steele's name was thrown out there and when we learned about his involvement in all of this," said Brittney Senger, Shadow Minister for Ethics & Democracy. "It became deeply, deeply troubling and something that action needs to be taken on."

Water at city's dog parks to be shut off next week

The City of Moose Jaw is advising residents that tap water will be shut off for the season at the city’s dog parks starting the week of Sept. 21.

Parks and recreation crews have begun the process of winterizing parks as temperatures begin to fall. This includes turning off the water for the 2025-26 fall and winter season.

The taps will be shut off at the city’s two dog parks, located next to one another at 1500 High St. West, just southwest of the Yara Centre and bike park. Although the water will be turned off, the dog parks remain open year-round.

The Big One returns to Swift Current

The Big One is set to take over the Living Sky Casino parking lot.

The parking will be open to those entering the show at 3 p.m on Tuesday. Spectator parking will be allocated in the east parking lot, while the entire west side of the parking lot is reserved for the show. The City of Swift Current has even approved the use of Battleford Trail for parking if the Rogue Cruisers require the space. 

Saskatoon Hilltops stopped in Eatonia for pregame practice ahead of Calgary matchup

The Saskatoon Hilltops made a stop in Eatonia this week, using a local high school field for a pregame practice.

After their team bus suffered a blown tire, the Hilltops' offensive coaches took advantage of the delay to run a practice session with the defensive squad, with the help of Eatonia Junior Spartans players.

Power outages push through southwest Sask.

SaskPower has advised southwest residents of several planned power outages scheduled for Tuesday, September 16.

The first power outage began at 10:00 a.m. in Pennant and rural areas northwest of Pennant, and will affect 37 customers while work is completed to power poles in the area.

Joel Cherry, spokesperson for SaskPower, shared that the second outage will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Hallonwuist and rural areas east of McMahon.

"The Hallonquist outage is for 70 customers," he said. "There they're splicing a new line and salvaging a pole."

Rainy weekend packs month's worth of rain over 48 hours

The Estevan area received a deluge over the weekend as moisture fell beginning Friday evening and was ever-present over the next few days. The system came with rainfall warnings that covered multiple areas, eventually depositing high amounts of rain overhead.

Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, details the start of that storm, with the intense rainfall that came in.

Funnel clouds mostly a no-show following tornado alerts yesterday afternoon

 

Environment and Climate Change Canada was tracking a system yesterday that had the possibility of sending tornadoes into Southeastern Saskatchewan and Southwestern Manitoba. That system is an offshoot of a larger area around North Dakota, which has resulted in a recent tornado outbreak in the area.

Meteorologist Crawford Luke says that we managed to miss the worst of what that storm could have brought.

Hillcrest School joins Terry Fox legacy with community walk and fundraiser

Hillcrest School students, staff, and families came together on Friday to honour the legacy of Terry Fox with their annual walk.

Principal Shannon Brown said the event was led by Constable Don DeChief and organized by their new first-year teacher, Ms. Henry. “We had about 127 participants, plus numerous families came and joined us,” she explained.

While most walked, some students added extra energy to the event. “There are always a few that like to run ahead, yes,” Brown said with a laugh.
